Table of the Schemahamphorasch (the 72 Names)
The 72 three-letter names of God (the Schemahamphorasch, or "divided name") that the Greater Holy Assembly refers to ("See annexed Table"), shown as Mathers printed the table in The Kabbalah Unveiled (1887, p. 171): four rows under the letters I, H, V, H, each read from right to left. The names come from Exodus 14:19, 20 and 21, which each have exactly 72 letters: written one above another, the first from right to left, the second from left to right and the third from right to left, each column gives a name. The Hebrew here is built from this site's own text of Exodus and matches Mathers's table letter for letter. Under each name: Mathers's transliteration and pronunciation, the names of its three letters, and an angel's name. Mathers notes that adding El or Yah to each name gives the 72 angels who rule over the 72 five-degree divisions of the zodiac; the angel names are spelled as in Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy (English translation, 1651). The angels are a later tradition, not part of the Zohar. Not scripture in any tradition.
