Mishnah Ta'anit 2:7

The men of the guard are permitted to drink wine in the evenings but not during the day, but the men of the father’s house may not [drink wine] either on the day or on the preceding evening. Mishnah Ta'anit 4:3

The men of the maamad fasted on four days of that week, from Monday to Thursday; they did not fast on Friday out of respect for Shabbat or on Sunday in order not to switch from the rest and delight [of Shabbat] to weariness and fasting and [thereby] die. On Sunday [they read], “In the beginning,” and, “Let there be a firmament;” On Monday, “Let there be a firmament,” and, “Let the waters be gathered together;” On Tuesday, “Let the waters be gathered together,” and, “Let there be lights;” On Wednesday, “Let there be lights,” and, “Let the waters swarm;” On Thursday, “Let the waters swarm,” and, “Let the earth bring forth;” On Friday, “Let the earth bring forth,” and, “And the heavens [and the earth] were completed.” For a long section two people read and for a short section one person. [This is how they would read] at Shacharit and Mussaf. And at minhah they assemble and read the section by heart, as they recite the Shema. On Friday at minhah they did not assemble out of respect for Shabbat.

The Babylonian Talmud

Babylonian Talmud Ta'anit 4:4

4. On days when Hallel is recited, there is no Ma'amad service in the morning (שחרית); on days when an additional (Musaf) offering is brought, there is no Ma'amad service during the Minḥah prayer; on days when a wood-offering is brought, there is no Ma'amad service during the Ne'ilah (closing) prayer; this is the opinion of R. 'Aḳiba. Ben 'Azzai said to him: thus R. Joshua taught: On days when an additional offering is brought, there is no Ma'amad service during the Ne'ilah prayer, but when a wood-offering is brought, there is no Ma'amad service during the Minḥah prayer. R. 'Aḳiba then accepted the version of Ben 'Azzai.

Babylonian Talmud Ta'anit 4:6

On the first of Ṭebet there were no Ma'amad services at all, because on that day Hallel was recited and an additional offering as well as a wood-offering were brought.

Babylonian Talmud Ta'anit 4:24

Our Rabbis have taught: Members of the division prayed that the offering of their brethren should be favorably accepted, while those of the Ma'amad assembled in the synagogues and observed four fasts in the week. On Monday they fasted for the safety of those who were on the high sea; on Tuesday for those travelling in the desert; on Wednesday, that the croup should not spread among the children; on Thursday for pregnant and for nursing women, for the former, that they should not miscarry and for the latter, that they should succeed in raising their infants. On Friday they did not fast, in honor of the Sabbath and, of course, not on Sabbath.

Babylonian Talmud Ta'anit 4:29

On days when Hallel was to be recited, there was no Ma'amad, etc. Why should there be such a distinction between the one (the day with a Musaf offering) and the other (the day with a wood offering)? Answer: The Musaf offering is a biblical ordinance and therefore requires no additional protection by the Rabbis (hence it is enough when it is made to supersede the Ma'amad during Minḥah service only), but the wood offering is a rabbinical enactment and therefore must have special protection (hence the wood offering is made to supersede both the Minḥah and the Ne'ilah services of the Ma'amad).

Babylonian Talmud Ta'anit 4:36

On the first of Ṭebet there were no Ma'amad services, etc. Said Mar Ḳashshisha, son of R. Ḥisda, to R. 'Ashi:

Babylonian Talmud Ta'anit 4:37

Why is it that the recital of the Hallel (which took place in the Temple during the morning prayer) eliminates the corresponding morning prayer of the Ma'amad, while the Musaf prayer does not eliminate the corresponding Musaf prayer of the Ma'amad? "What!" replied R. 'Ashi, "is it possible that the Musaf prayer which eliminates even a non-corresponding service of the Ma'amad (that of Minḥah) should not eliminate the corresponding Musaf service of the Ma'amad?" Said Mar Ḳashshisha: What I meant to say is this: Let the Musaf prayer eliminate only a Ma'amad service that corresponds to it (the Musaf but not the Minḥah). R. Jose actually agrees with this opinion of yours, replied R. 'Ashi, for we find in a Baraita: R. Jose said, on all days on which a Musaf service is held a Ma'amad service is likewise held. Now, to which Ma'amad service does he refer? To that of Shaḥarit? This (the retention of the Ma'amad's Shaḥarit service on days which have the Musaf prayer) is admitted also by the first authority of the Mishnah (R. 'Aḳiba)! Or does he refer to the Ma'amad service during the Musaf prayer? Does not the Musaf eliminate even its own Ma'amad service? Or does he refer to the Ma'amad's Minḥah service? That service is eliminated by the wood offering! No other alternative, then, is possible than to say that he refers to the Ma'amad's Ne'ilah service, which proves that the Musaf eliminates only that Ma'amad service which is simultaneous (and hence conflicts) with it (namely the Ma'amad's Musaf), but none of the services which are not simultaneous with it (as those of Minḥah and Ne'ilah). It stands proved.

Babylonian Talmud Ta'anit 4:38

Why does the Mishnah not say also that on the first of Nisan there was no Ma'amad service, because on that day there was the recital of Hallel, a Musaf and a wood offering? Said Raba, this omission proves that the recital of Hallel on New Moon is not a biblical ordinance, for thus said R. Johanan in the name of R. Simeon b. Jehozadak: On eighteen days of the year the whole Hallel is recited, namely, on the eight days of the Feast of Booths, the eight days of Ḥanukkah, the first day of Passover, and on Pentecost; in the Diaspora, however, Hallel is recited on twenty-one days: nine days of the Feast of Booths, eight days of Ḥanukkah, the (first) two Days of Passover, and the two days of Pentecost.
