despiseth

Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom.

For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.

He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.

Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

He that walketh in his uprightness feareth the LORD: but he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him.

He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.

A fool despiseth his father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.

A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.

He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die.

The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil;

And Charisius heard it and said: I will not imitate you, neither will I hasten to destroy you; nor though I may so do, will I put bonds about thee; and I will not suffer thee to speak with this sorcerer; and if thou obey me, well, but if not, I know what I must do.

O my son! let not thy parents curse thee, and the Lord be pleased with them; for it hath been said, "He who despiseth his father or his mother let him die the death (I mean the death of sin); and he who honoureth his parents shall prolong his days and his life and shall see all that is good."

The righteous despiseth not the chastening of the Lord; His will is always before the Lord.

OF ORPHANS. [iv., 1.] CHRISTIAN people who have no children ought to educate orphans, whether youths or virgins, and adopt them as their own children, and love them yet more. And he that hath a son who hath attained the due age, let him marry the orphan virgin. And if ye do thus, ye shall accomplish a great work and be the fathers of the orphans, (and) obtain a reward from the Lord God for the service ye have done. But if there be one that is proud, and despiseth the orphan, and saith, I will not marry a poor woman, let him understand then who is the father of the orphan, and the protector of the widow. For he that thinketh to do thus shall scatter his wealth to another, and shall fulfil in himself that which the Scripture saith, “ What the saints have not eaten, the Syrians‘ shall eat,” even as Isaiah saith, “Your land a foreign enemy shall devour it in your sight.”

And when I speak to Hagar in thy presence, she despiseth my words, because she has conceived, and thou wilt say nothing to her; may the Lord judge between me and thee for what thou hast done to me.
