Jerusalem Talmud Sanhedrin 1:65

Jeremiah intercalated outside the Land. Ezechiel intercalated outside the Land. Baruch ben Neriah intercalated outside the Land. Ḥanania the nephew of Rebbi Joshua intercalated outside the Land. Rebbi sent him three letters through Rebbi Isaac and Rebbi Nathan. In one he wrote, to His holiness Ḥanania. And in one he wrote, the kid goats you left behind became rams. And in one he wrote, if you do not accept, go to the thistle desert, do the slaughtering and let Onias sprinkle. After the first [letter], he honored them. After the second, he honored them. After the third, he wanted to disgrace them. They said to him, you cannot do that since you already did honor us. Rebbi Isaac rose and read in the Torah: These are the holidays of Ḥanania the nephew of Rebbi Joshua. They said to him, the holidays of the Eternal. He told them, that is with us. Rebbi Nathan rose and concluded: For from Babylonia will Torah go forth and the Eternal’s word from Nahar-Peqod. They said to him, for from Zion will Torah go forth and the Eternal’s word from Jerusalem. He told them, that is with us. He went to complain about them to Rebbi Jehudah ben Bathyra at Nisibis. He said to him, follow them, follow them. He said to him, I do not know whom I left there. Who would tell me that they are knowledgeable in computations as I am? If they did not know the computations, they should listen to him. Since they are knowledgeable in computations as he is, he has to listen to them. He got up and rode on a horse. Where he reached, he reached. Where he did not reach, they continued to follow the corrupt [calendar].

Jerusalem Talmud Sanhedrin 1:70

Rebbi Abba said, in earlier times, every one was ordinating his students; for example Rabban Joḥanan ben Zakkai ordained Rebbi Eliezer and Rebbi Joshua, Rebbi Joshua Rebbi Aqiba, and Rebbi Aqiba Rebbi Meïr and Rebbi Simeon. He said, Rebbi Meïr shall preside; the face of Rebbi Simeon became yellow. Rebbi Aqiba told him, it is enough that I and your Creator recognize your power. They changed and honored this dynasty, saying: If a court ordained without the consent of the Patriarch, their ordination is no ordination, but if the Patriarch ordained without consent of the court, his ordination is ordination. They changed again and instituted that neither shall the Court ordain without consent of the Patriarch, nor the Patriarch without consent of the Court.

Jerusalem Talmud Sanhedrin 2:26

It is written: David turned. Who are the “empty ones”? Rebbi Abba bar Cahana said, the most empty one, that is the dancer. She told him, today the honor of my father’s house became obvious. One said about the family of Saul that one never saw a heel or a thumb of them. That is what is written: He came to the sheep fences. Rebbi Abun ben Rebbi Eleazar: That was a fence inside a fence. Saul came to spread his feet. He saw him how he lifted a little and covered a little. He said, one who would touch such modesty would be cursed. That is what he told him, behold, what your eyes saw today, etc. Is it not written “I had mercy on you” but it had mercy on you, your modesty had mercy on you. David told Michal, etc. With the servant girls you mentioned, with them I shall be honored, for they are not servant girls but mothers. How was she punished? Michal, Saul’s daughter, had no child, But is it not written: The sixth Yitreˋam, of his wife Calf. She mood like a calf and died.

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 1:7

A ducenarius honored Rebbi Jehudah the Prince with a plate full of denarii. He took one of them and sent the remainder to him. He asked Rebbi Simeon ben Laqish who said, he shall bring the value to the Dead Sea. But was he not an acquaintance and it was in the past? Rebbi Abbahu said, did not Rabban Gamliel ben Rebbi asked me, may one go to a fair, and I forbade it to him, although it was stated: “one goes to fairs and buys there male and female slaves.” Rebbi Simeon ben Laqish said, not only Jewish slaves but even Gentiles, because he brings them under the wings of the Shekhina. What about this? Rabban Gamliel was a minor personality and Rebbi Abbahu desired to confine him. But Rebbi Judan the Prince was an important person and Rebbi Simeon ben Laqish wanted to limit the matter.

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 3:25

An idol which was broken, Rebbi Joḥanan said it is forbidden, Rebbi Simeon ben Laqish said it is permitted. Where do we hold? If in the future he would return it to its vessel, everybody agrees it is forbidden. If in the future he will not return it to its vessel, everybody agrees that it is permitted. But we hold if it is not indicated. Rebbi Joḥanan said, not indicated is as if he would return it to its vessel; Rebbi Simeon ben Laqish said, not indicated is as if he would not return it to its vessel. Rebbi Yudan the father of Rebbi Mattaniah said, if they were lying on their spot it is if he would return it to its vessel. Rebbi Simeon ben Laqish objected to Rebbi [Joḥanan]: Is it not written, therefore the priests of Dagon and all visitors to Dagon’s temple will not step on Dagon’s threshold? He told him, this teaches that they honored the threshold more than Dagon. Rebbi Jeremiah in the name of Rebbi Ḥiyya bar Abba, the peoples of the world made one threshold; Israel made many thresholds; what is the reason? I shall visit on [any] who skips over the threshold [on that day].

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 3:28

MISHNAH: If somebody finds vessels and on them the form of the sun, the form of the moon, the form of a dragon, he should bring them to the Dead Sea. Rabban Simeon ben Gamliel says, on honored ones it is forbidden, on contemptible ones permitted. Rebbi Yose said, he grinds them and disperses them into the wind or throws them into the Sea. They told him, but then it becomes fertilizer and it was said, nothing of the ban should cling to your hand.

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 3:31

Where do we hold? If it is certain that they are worshipped, even the contemptible ones are forbidden. If it is certain that they are not worshipped, even the honored ones are permitted. But we must deal with the indeterminate case. Rebbi Crispus said, those cups belong to the contemptible category, for Rebbi Ḥiyya bar Abba had a pitcher and the (worth) [fortune] of Rome was pictured on it. He came to ask Rebbi Joḥanan who told him, since water swims on top of it, it is a contemptible one. A drinking cup is contemptible since one immerses it in water. In the days of Rebbi Joḥanan they started painting on walls and he did not protest against it. [In the days of Rebbi Abun they started depicting by mosaics and he did not protest against it.]

Jerusalem Talmud Makkot 2:25

[Just as the city grants asylum, so does its domain grants asylum.] “Three cities did Moses designate in Transjordan. When they came to the Land they designated another three. In the future there will be another three, as it is said three, three, three. This makes nine. Abba Shaul says, three. Three of three times three makes nine. Additional makes twelve. Rebbi Nehorai says, three, three, three make nine. Additional makes twelve. To these three makes fifteen.” It is written: Six cities of refuge there shall be for you, that all six of them give asylum simultaneously. And you say so? It follows what Rebbi Samuel [ben Aina] said in the name of Rebbi Aḥa: Five things was the last Temple missing which were in the first Temple, as it is written: Go to the mountain, bring wood, etc., up to I may be honored. It is written I shall be honored, without the letter he. These are the five things which the last Temple was missing which were in the first Temple. They are: The fire, the Ark, Urim and Tummim, anointing oil, and the Holy Spirit.

Jerusalem Talmud Horayot 3:28

“The anointed with the anointing oil,” in the first Temple. “The one clothed in multiple garb,” in the later Temple. It follows what Rebbi Ina said in the name of Rebbi Aḥa: In five things was the later Temple deficient compared with the first. What is the reason? Go to the mountain, bring wood, etc. I should be honored is missing a ה. These are the five things in which the later Temple was deficient compared with the first. And these are it: The fire, the ark, Urim and Tummim, the (holy) oil [of anointing and the holy spirit.]

The Babylonian Talmud

Babylonian Talmud Ta'anit 3:35

Why was he called Nahum of Gamzo? Because whenever something untoward happened to him he would say: "This, too, is for a good purpose." Once the Rabbis wished to send a present to the Emperor and they deliberated through whom they should send it. They then said: Let us send it through Nahum of Gamzo, because he is one to whom miracles always happen. So they sent the present through him. On the way, Nahum stopped at an inn over night. During the night the occupants (of the inn) got up, took out everything that was in the bags and filled the bags with dust. When he arrived at his destination, the bags were untied and it was found that they were filled with dust. The emperor, insulted, said, the Jews are mocking me, and gave an order to have Nahum executed. Nahum, however, said: "This too is for the good." Thereupon the prophet Elijah appeared in the disguise of one of them and said to the emperor: This is perhaps some of the dust of Abraham, for when Abraham threw dust against an enemy it turned into swords, and when he threw stubble it turned into arrows, as it is written (Isaiah, 41.2): "His sword maketh them as the dust, his bow as the driven stubble." Now, there was a certain province which they had been thitherto unable to conquer. They tried some of the dust against this province and succeeded in conquering it. Thereupon the emperor took Nahum into the treasury, filled his bags with precious stones and pearls, and dismissed him with great honors. When on his way back he came again to the same inn, the occupants asked him: "What did you bring with you for the emperor that they honored you so?" "I brought them what I took from here," replied Nahum. Thereupon the occupants of the inn took some of the same dust and brought it to the emperor. It was tried, but did not turn into swords and arrows. All the inhabitants were then executed.

Babylonian Talmud Megillah 3:50

Shmuel also was subject to the authority of Rav, and it was Rav who of his own accord honored him. But he would do so only in his presence, but not when he was not present.

Babylonian Talmud Megillah 4:91

Nehunia b. Hakaneh was asked by his disciples: How have you lived so long? He replied: Never in my life have I been honored through the degradation of my friend, nor has the curse of my fellow gone up with me into my bed, and I have been generous with my money.

Babylonian Talmud Megillah 4:92

I have not sought respect through the degradation of my fellow, as was the case with R. Huna who once was carrying a spade on his shoulder. R. Hana b. Hanilai wanted to hold it for him, but he said to him: If you are accustomed to carry it in your own town, take it, but if not, I do not want to be honored through your degradation.

Babylonian Talmud Megillah 4:98

“I have not accepted presents,” like R. Elazar, who, when presents were sent to him from the Patriarch’s [house], would not accept them and when he was invited there would not go. He said to them: Do you not want me to live, since it says, “He that hates gifts shall live?” (Proverbs 15:27). Zera, when presents were sent to him from the Exilarch, would not accept them, but when he was invited there he used to go, saying, “They are honored by my presence.”
