If it died or broke a limb, he has to provide him with another donkey. Somebody rented a donkey to lead it on the mountain but led it in the valley; if it slipped, he is not liable; if it suffered a heat stroke, he is liable. In the valley, but he led it on the mountain; if it slipped, he is liable; if it suffered a heat stroke, he is not liable but if it happened because of the ascent, he is liable. Somebody rented a cow to plough on the mountain but ploughed in the valley, if the plough’s peg broke, he is not liable. In the valley but he ploughed on the mountain, if the plough’s peg broke, he is liable. To thresh legumes but he threshed grain, he is not liable; to thresh grain but he threshed legumes, he is liable, for legumes make [the floor] slippery.

Jerusalem Talmud Bava Metzia 6:12

MISHNAH: Somebody who rented a donkey to use it to transport wheat but transported barley, grain but transported straw, is liable. How much did one add to the load that he became liable? Symmachos said in the name of Rebbi Meïr: one se’ah for a camel, three qab for a donkey.

“If a caravan was attacked by soldiers and one of its members managed to save something from their hand, he saved equally [for all]; but if they gave him permission, he saved for himself. If donkey-drivers were attacked by robbers and one of theirs managed to save something from their hand, he saved equally [for all]; but if he stipulated with them in court, he saved for himself. If toll collectors forgave to partners, they forgave equally [for all]; but if they indicated, we forgave to Mr. X, what they forgave, they forgave him.”

MISHNAH: If one was working on figs he may not eat grapes, on grapes he may not eat figs; but he may restrain himself until he reaches the place of the good ones and eat there. In all cases they only referred to the time of finishing work, but because of returning lost property to its owner they said that workers may eat when they go from row to row, and when they return from the wine press, and a donkey while offloading.

Jerusalem Talmud Bava Metzia 8:9

MISHNAH: Somebody exchanged a cow for a donkey and it gave birth, or he sold his slave girl and she gave birth. If one said, [it happened] before I sold, the other said, after I bought, they shall split. If he had two slaves, one adult and one young, or two fields, one large and one small. The buyer says, I bought the large one, and the seller says, I do not know: he acquired the large one. The seller says, I sold the small and the other party says, I do not know: he has only the small one. If one says the large one and the other says the small, let the seller swear that he sold the small one. If both say, I do not know, they shall split.

Jerusalem Talmud Bava Batra 5:1

MISHNAH: He who sells a ship sold the mast, and the sail, and the anchors, and all steering gear, but he neither sold the slaves, nor the storage bags, nor the load. If he said, “it and all that is in it,” all is sold. He who sold a truck did not sell the mules; he who sold the mules did not sell the truck. He who sold the yoke did not sell the cattle; he who sold the cattle did not sell the yoke. Rebbi Jehudah says, the price is an indicator. How is that? If he said to him, sell me your yoke and harness for 200 denars, it is obvious that yoke and harness are not worth 200 denars. But the Sages say, the price is no indicator. He who sells a donkey did not sell its gear. Nahum the Mede says, he sold the gear. Rebbi Jehudah says, sometimes it is sold, sometimes it is not sold. How is this? If a donkey was standing there with his gear on it and he said, sell me this donkey, his gear is sold; your donkey, for this one the gear is not sold. He who sells a donkey sold the foal; he who sold a cow did not sell its young. He who sold a dungheap sold the manure; he who sold a cistern sold its water. He who sold a beehive sold the bees; he who sold the dovecote sold the pigeons. He who bought the yield of a dovecote leaves the first brood to fledge, of a beehive takes three swarms and then intermittently, honeycombs leaves two honeycombs, olive trees to cut down leaves two handbreadths.

Jerusalem Talmud Sanhedrin 3:20

They saw the young Rebbi Bina collecting donkey’s dung on the Sabbath. Rebbi Jonah and Rebbi Yose permitted baking for Ursicinus on the Sabbath. Rebbi Mana said, I asked before my father Rebbi Jonah, did not Rebbi Zeˋira and Rebbi Joḥanan in the name of Rebbi Yannai, Rebbi Jeremiah, Rebbi Joḥanan in the name of Rebbi Simeon ben Yehoṣadaq, say that they voted on the upper floor of the Niṭzah house in Lydda, etc.? He said, he did not intend to lead you to apostasy, he only wanted to eat warm bread.. What means “in public”? The rabbis of Caesarea say ten, as it is written: I shall be sanctified in the midst of the Children of Israel.

Jerusalem Talmud Sanhedrin 6:3

Rebbi Joḥanan said, the first time one listens to him whether or not his arguments are substantial. After that, if his arguments are substantial one listens to him, otherwise one does not listen to him. They said, only if his later arguments are substantial. Ḥizqiah asked: If he was led out to be executed when he became paralyzed, do we say that had he not become paralyzed, he would have argued for his acquittal? Rebbi Joḥanan heard this and said, this is a donkey’s question. But it must be: If he was led out to be executed and said, I have to argue for my acquittal: when he became paralyzed, do we say that had he not become paralyzed, he would have argued for his acquittal? He said, that is a statement.

Jerusalem Talmud Sanhedrin 7:46

Does one rend his garment nowadays? Rebbi Yose, Rebbi Jeremiah in the name of Rebbi Ḥiyya bar Abba, Rebbi Ḥisqiah, Rebbi Jeremiah in the name of Rebbi Joḥanan: When blasphemers proliferated, they stopped rending. Does one rend for substitute names today? Let us hear from the following: Rebbi Simeon ben Laqish was travelling on the highway. He met a Samaritan who was repeatedly blaspheming, and he was rending. He dismounted from the donkey and gave him a blow on his heart saying to him: Samaritan! Does your mother have garments to supply me with? [His word] This implies that one rends for substitute names and rends his garments at the present time.

Jerusalem Talmud Sanhedrin 10:42

Rebbi Eleazar said, just as a nail cannot be taken out of a door without [loss of] wood, so it is impossible to get rid of Peˋor without [loss of] life. It happened that Sabbatai from Ulam leased his donkey to a Gentile woman to bow down before Peˋor. When they arrived at Peˋor’s temple, she told him, wait here for me while I am entering and bowing down before Peˋor. After she came out, he told her, wait here for me while I am entering and do what you did. What did he do? He entered, relieved himself, and cleansed himself on Peˋor’s nose. All were praising him and said, nobody yet had done what this man did. It happened that Menaḥem from Guvta-Ariaḥ was occupied with amphoras when the spirit of Peˋor came to him in the night. What did he do? He took a spit, stood up against him; he fled. He came to him in the second night and asked him, Menaḥem, why do you curse me? He was afraid of him and promised him, I shall not curse you in the future. It happened that a ruler came from overseas to bow down before Peˋor. He told them, bring one bull, one ram, and one sheep, to bow down before Peˋor. They told him, you have no need for all of these; you only have to strip yourself for him. What did he do? He provoked סניגורים against them; they were hitting them and smashing their brains with bats, saying to them: woe to you and your error.

Jerusalem Talmud Sanhedrin 10:47

How was he removed? When Aḥitophel saw that his counsel was not taken, he saddled his donkey, etc. Three things did Aḥitophel command his sons: Do not rebel against the dynasty of David, since we find that the Holy One, praise to Him, shows them favor even when they acted brazenly. Do not have dealings with anybody who has a lucky streak. And if Pentecost was clear, sow wheat of the best quality. But we do not know whether clear from dew or clear from šarav.

Jerusalem Talmud Sanhedrin 11:25

“And a prophet who transgressed his own word,” like the companion of Micha. That is what is written: An old prophet was dwelling at Bethel; his son came and told him all the actions which the man of God had wrought, etc. Their father asked them, which way did he go, etc. He told his sons, saddle the donkey for me, etc. He followed the man of God and found him sitting under the terebinth, etc. He said to him, come with me to my house and eat. He told him, I cannot return, etc., up to he said to him, I also am a prophet like you and an angel spoke to me the words of the Eternal as follows, etc., up to he should eat food and drink water; he tricked him. What means “tricked him”? He lied to him. While they were sitting at table, the word of the Eternal came to the prophet who had turned him back. It is not written “who had returned,” but “who had turned him back.” Is that not an argument de minore ad majus? Since one who fed his neighbor food in falsehood was worthy of the Word to be addressed to him, one who feeds his neighbor food in truth, so much more.

Jerusalem Talmud Shevuot 6:24

Some want to understand it from here: An ox, or a donkey, or a sheep. Since these are particular in that they are subject to breaking, kidnapping, and dying, this excludes real estate which is not subject to breaking, kidnapping, and dying. I shall exclude real estate but shall not exclude slaves. Since these are particular in that they are subject to a fine, this excludes slaves which are not subject to a fine. I shall exclude slaves but shall not exclude documents since they are subject to fines. Since these are particular in that they are subject to overcharging, this excludes documents which are not subject to overcharging. From here they say, if somebody sells documents to the spice trader, it is subject to claims of overcharging. Rebbi Ismael explained: Or a person, if he would swear, a general statement. To cause evil or cause good, a detail. Anything which a person will blurt out, a repeat general statement. A general statement followed by a detail followed by a general statement, you only argue in the pattern of the detail. Since the detail is about monetary claims, [originating] from himself, which can be collected by court order, having monetary value, which is a fixed value, and are movables, and one is not liable for punishment and fines. Monetary claims, excluding one who said to another, give me the 200 denar which you promised me but never gave. [Originating] from himself, excluding one who said to another, you cursed me and shamed me, who is not liable. Which can be collected by court order, excluding one who said to another, you raped or seduced X’s daughter. It has monetary value, excluding documents. Which is a fixed value, excluding slaves. Movables, excluding real estate. One is not liable for punishment, excluding one who said to another, you set fire to my grain stack on the Sabbath; who is not liable. One is not liable for fines, excluding double, quadruple, or quintuple restitution which are fines.

Jerusalem Talmud Shevuot 8:6

It is written, if a man give to his neighbor a donkey, or an ox, or a sheep etc. An oath before the Eternal shall be between the two of them. Stolen, if it was stolen stealing from him. Lost, and if, to include the lost one. So far following Rebbi Aqiba. Following Rebbi Ismael? Rebbi Ismael stated: Since you say that he pays for theft which is close to duress, for loss which is not close to duress not so much more?

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 1:38

MISHNAH: At a place where they used to sell small cattle to Gentiles one sells; at a place where they used not to sell one does not sell; nobody should change this because of controversy. Nowhere does one sell to them large animals, calves, and donkey foals, whole or damaged. Rebbi Jehudah permits damaged ones; Ben Bathyra permits horses.

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 1:43

“Rebbi Jehudah permits damaged ones.” Rebbi Jehudah said this only for a damaged one which cannot be healed. They told him, may he not bring a male to it, he fertilizes it and it gives birth? He said to them, I also said this only about a male (horse) [damaged one] which cannot be healed. They told him, may he not bring a female to him, she is fertilized by him and gives birth? Rav Abin in the name of the rabbis there: This implies that one is forbidden to provide them with fetuses. There, we have stated: “If somebody buys a Non-Jew’s donkey fetus or who sells one to him even though he is not authorized, or one who enters into partnership, or accepts from him as contractor, or lets it in contract, is not liable for firstling.” Rebbi Ḥaggai asked before Rebbi Yose, does this not imply that one is forbidden to provide them with fetuses? He said to them, Rebbi Abin in the name of the rabbis there already preceded you: This implies that one is forbidden to provide them with fetuses.

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 1:54

לֹא תְחָנֵּֽם do not credit them with charm. But was it not stated: It happened that Rabban Gamliel while walking on the Temple Mount saw a beautiful Gentile woman and recited a blessing over her. Does Rabban Gamliel usually look at women? It was a curved road, like a pswros, he looked at her because he could not avoid her. But did not Rebbi Ze‘ura in the name of Rebbi Yose ben Ḥanina, Rebbi Abba, Rebbi Ḥiyya in the name of Rebbi Joḥanan say: לֹא תְחָנֵּֽם do not credit them with charm? What did he say? He did not say ἀβάσκαντα but “praised be He Who has beautiful creatures in His world,” because even if one saw a beautiful donkey, a beautiful camel, a beautiful horse, one says “praised be He Who has such beautiful creatures in His world.”

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 3:24

It is written: The people from Babylon made Sukkot Benot, the chicken and its young, and the people of Kuta made the Nergal, the foot of Jacob and the foot of Joseph, I divined that the Eternal blessed me for your sake; the Eternal blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake. The people of Ḥamma made the Ashima, a sheep, as you say, the Cohen shall atone for him by the asham ram. The Awim made the Nibḥan, a dog, and the Tartaq, a donkey. And the Sepharwites burned their sons in fire [to Adrammelekh and Annamelekh the gods of Sepharwaim], peacock and pheasant.

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 5:3

It was stated: “The wages of donkey drivers, carriers, and all those working with Sabbatical produce are sabbatical.” Rebbi Ze`ira said, this baraita deals with permitted produce. And what Rebbi Joḥanan taught those of the House of Rebbi Yannai that they should not accept in their hands wine as wages but money, he taught them following Rebbi Jehudah and Rebbi Neḥemiah. Rebbi Ilai said, this baraita deals with idolatrous produce. As Rebbi Abbahu said in the name of Rebbi Joḥanan, in matters of libation wine they fined him a fine.

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 5:9

MISHNAH: If somebody hires a donkey to transport libation wine, its wages are forbidden. If he hired it to sit on it, even though he put his barrel on it, its wages are permitted.

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 5:10

HALAKHAH: “If somebody hires a donkey,” etc. How far? Up to when the donkey takes offense.

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 5:10

HALAKHAH: “If somebody hires a donkey,” etc. How far? Up to when the donkey takes offense.

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 5:46

MISHNAH: The following are forbidden and they forbid in the most minute amount: Libation wine, idols, heart-removed skins, and an ox which was stoned, and the calf whose neck was broken, and the birds of the sufferer from skin disease, and the nazir’s hair, and the firstborn donkey, and meat in milk, and profane animals slaughtered in the Temple precinct. These are forbidden and they forbid in the most minute amount.

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 5:52

And the firstborn donkey. Breaking the neck, breaking the neck. Since there one buries it and it is forbidden for usufruct, also here one buries it and it is forbidden for usufruct.

Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 5:56

Rebbi Yose asked in the name of Rebbi Ḥanina: May prohibitions of usufruct become insignificant in (combination) [by being shredded]? But did we not state “the ox which was stoned”? Explain it in pieces. But did we not state “the birds of the sufferer from skin disease”? Explain it as a bird among birds. But did we not state “the nazir’s hair”? Can you say a bird among birds? When they came to study `Orlah did Rebbi Jacob object before Rebbi Yose, did we not state, “if somebody weaves the length of a sīt of firstling’s wool, the cloth must be burned. Of nazir’s hair or firstling donkey in sackcloth, the sackcloth must be burned.” He told him, (if the Tanna had said before us, you would have given) correctly.

Jerusalem Talmud Makkot 3:8

MISHNAH: One might plough a single furrow and be liable because of it for eight prohibitions. If one ploughs with an ox and a donkey which had been sanctified for kilaim in a vineyard, in a Sabbatical year, on a holiday, he is a Cohen and a nazir at an impure place. Onias ben Ḥakhinai said, also if he wore kilaim. They told him, this is not of the same category. He told them, neither is the nazir of the same category.

Jerusalem Talmud Niddah 1:19

Rav Ḥiyya bar Ashi was sitting before Rav who saw him disturbed. He said to him, what is the matter? He said to him, my female donkey is pregnant and will give birth; then I have to get her to copulate before she is out of heat. He said to him, when did the male mount her? He said, on day X. He calculated and said, she still has some time until then. It was stated so: A quick one does not need less than the days of the moon and one who is late is not later than the days of the sun. The words of Rebbi Joshua disagree, since Rebbi Joshua ben Levi said, the cattle herd of Antoninus passed by and those of the house of Rebbi took bulls from them to copulate. Some cows gave birth soon and some of them later. Here it is about an impure animal, there about a pure animal. But is it not written, “do you know the time the mountain goats will give birth, watch the birthing of gazelles,” “count months, make them complete, you will know the time of their giving birth.” He told him: A pure wild animal is like a domestic impure animal.

The Babylonian Talmud

Babylonian Talmud Sukkah 1:436

if he cuts from any one of them a piece one handbreadth square, it is susceptible to uncleanliness’. Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish in the name of R. Yannai said, it can be used as a patch for [the saddle of] a donkey.

Babylonian Talmud Megillah 1:510

“Abigail”, as it is written, “And it was so, as she rode on her donkey and came down by the hidden side of the mountain” (II Samuel 25:20). “By the hidden side [seter] of the mountain”? It should say “from the mountain”!

Babylonian Talmud Makkot 2:150

And even so, still it is written (Samuel 2 17,23), "and Achitofel saw that his counsel was not accepted, he saddled his donkey, he got up and went to his house and to his city, he gave order to his household, and he strangled himself etc."

Babylonian Talmud Makkot 3:232

There is a case of where on plows a single row, and is liable on it due to eight separate prohibitions. One who [1]plows with an ox and a donkey, [2,3]which are sanctified, over [4]mixed seeds in a vineyard [5]on the sabbatical year, [6]on a holiday, and he is a [7]Kohen and a [8]Nazir in a house of tumah.

Babylonian Talmud Makkot 3:235

There is a single plowing... etc.: Rav Yanai said, In the group, they voted and decided that one who [merely] covers Kilayim [mixed seeds] incurs malkus. Rebbi Yochanon asked him, Wasn't that already stated in our Mishna? There is a case of where on plows a single row, and is liable on it due to eight separate prohibitions. One who plows with an ox and a donkey, which are sanctified, over mixed seeds in a vineyard" This plowing that one is liable on because of Kilayim, how would [such a case] be found? Would it not be where he covers them as he is plowing?

Babylonian Talmud Makkot 3:267

MISHNA: How do flog him? We tie his two hands to the post here and here. The superintendent of the synagogue grabs his clothes. If they tear they tear, and if they rip at the seams they rip at the seams. until he reveals his heart. A stone is placed behind him. The superintendent of the synagogue stands on it and a strap is in his hand of a calf doubled once into two and then again into four. And two straps of donkey hide go up and down through it. The handle is a handbreadth and its width is a handbreadth and its tip reaches his stomach.

Babylonian Talmud Makkot 3:276

And two straps. etc.: It was taught in a baraisa, of donkey.... As a certain Galelien expounded to Rav Chisdah. (Issiah 1,3) The ox knows its master and the donkey knows its master's trough. Isreal does not know etc." Hashem says let the one who recognizes his master's trough come and exact punishment from the one who does not recognize his master's trough.
