“Rebbi Eleazar ben Azariah’s cow went out with a strip between her horns against the will of the Sages.” Rebbi Abba: Both (and Rebbi) [Rav and] Samuel are saying, the words of the Sages are that even pulling her with them is forbidden. Rebbi Abba in the name of Samuel: If its horns were drilling it is permitted. Rebbi Yose said, I pointed out the difficulty before Rebbi Abba and he said, we only stated: “the female camel with a nose ring.” Rebbi Zeˋira in the name of Samuel: A badly behaved ox goes out with his bridle; our teachers in the Diaspora do this. Rebbi Illa, Rav Jehudah in the name of [Rebbi] Simeon ben [Rebbi] Ḥiyya: A dog goes out with his muzzle. If to (expect) [punish] him it is forbidden, if so he should not eat his bridle it is permitted.
MISHNAH: With what may a woman go out and with what may she not go out? A woman may go out neither with woolen or linen threads nor with ribbons on her head and she may not immerse herself wearing them unless she relaxes them. To the public domain not with a frontlet nor with a head-dress hanging down the cheeks as long as they are not sewn, nor an under-cap. Also not with a city of gold, nor with a chain, nor with nose rings, nor with a ring without a seal, nor with a pin. If she went out she is not liable for a purification offering.
It is written, on that day the Eternal will remove the splendor of the anklets, bark shoes, as you are saying, with their feet they skid. The head bands, שלטוניה, as you are saying “the head-band of the hair net.” The half-moons, necklaces, as you are saying, he took the half-moons from the necks of their camels. The pendants, Solomonic jewelry. Chains, chains. Veils, silken. Head bands, diadems, as you are saying, your head bands on your heads. Foot chains, ποδοψέλλα. Tyings, bells. Belly wraps, Aquila translated אסטו מוכריאה, something which is put on the place of breathing. And incantations, precious stones put on the larynx. Rings, rings. Nose rings, something put on the nose. Overcoats, περιζόματα. Wrappings, tunics and tunics. The shawls, large fine tissues. Handbags, decorated belts and decorated pure silk tissues. As you are saying, he took from their hands and tied it in tissue. The head covers, head covers. The sheets, the sheets. The turbans, אוֹלָרַייָא, as you are saying, he said, put … the pure turban on his head. And the veils, fine cloth, as you are saying, they took away my veil, the watchmen on the walls.

HALAKHAH: Ḥanan bar Immi said before (Rebbi) [Rav] Jehudah [in the name of] Menashia bar (Menashe) Jeremiah: But only that a young girl should not go out with an old woman’s nor an old woman with a young girl’s. But did we not state: “Girls go out with threads”? Rebbi Abba in the name of Rav Jehudah, even wound around her neck. Rebbi Samuel in the name of Rebbi Zeˋira, there even if she cannot bring (her nose) [a thread similar] to her hair she may leave with it. But here, a young girl should not go out with an old woman’s nor an old woman with a young girl’s.
HALAKHAH: 2. Rebbi Ḥizqiah said, if one opens the hem which is connected to the garment. Rebbi Yose said, if one opens a [split] garment which is made like two sheets. If shoe or sandal laces were dislocated, one removes and returns them, only one may not knot them. If its nose was dislocated, there are Tannaim who state, it is permitted to put it back, and there are Tannaim who state, it is forbidden to put it back. They wanted to say, he who says that it is permitted, if there is one hole; he who says that it is forbidden, if there are two holes. Rebbi Yose ben Rebbi Abun said, in both cases it is following him who says that there are two holes. What about it? He who says that it is permitted, if they are loose; he who says that it is forbidden, if they are squeezed.
It happened that one person started the incense outside and brought it inside. When he left, he said to his father, even though you were interpreting all your days, you did not act until this man came and acted. He answered him, even though you were interpreting all our days, we acted only following the will of the Sages. I am wondering whether this man will have many days in the world. After a short time he died. But some are saying, his nose gushed out worms and something like a calf’s hoof grew in his brain.
Some want to say, he was the same for the Cow, on Tabernacles, and on the Day of Atonement. Rebbi Simon does not say so, but either the Cow and Tabernacles was one and Atonement one, or Cow and Atonement was one and Tabernacles one. He who said, after a short time he died, he did all three. He who said, his nose gushed out worms and something like a calf’s hoof grew in his brain, follows him who said, either Cow and Tabernacles was one and Atonement one, or Cow and Atonement was one and Tabernacles one. The Courtyard cried about them, get out of here, sons of Eli, you defiled our God’s Temple. “On that day, the corner of the altar was damaged and they put a block of salt there lest it should look deficient since any altar without corner, or walkway, or base is disqualified.”
Rebbi Zeˋira, Rebbi Ḥiyya in the name of Rebbi Joḥanan: If a wall collapsed in a dead-end street populated by Gentiles, but where one Jew lived, one digs there because of the Jew. How far? Two Amoraim. One said, up to his nose; the other said, up to his navel. He who said, up to his nose, about one who was healthy; he who said up to his navel, about one who was intoxicated.

Rebbi Aḥa, Rebbi Jacob bar Idi in the name of Rebbi Jonathan, Rebbi Tanḥum bar Ḥiyya: A badly behaved donkey goes out with his bridle. Rebbi Illa, Rav Jehudah in the name of Rebbi Simeon ben Rebbi Ḥiyya: A dog goes out with his muzzle. If to punish him it is forbidden, if so he should not eat his bridle it is permitted.
Rebbi Simeon ben Yohai stated: Aqiba my teacher used to preach, there appeared a star out of Jacob there appeared Koziba out of Jacob. When Rebbi Aqiba saw Bar Koziba he said, this is King Messias. Rebbi Joḥanan ben Torta said to him, Aqiba! Grass will grow from your jaws and still David’s son (still has to) [will not have] come. Rebbi Joḥanan said, the voice of Emperor Hadrian killing eighty thousand myriads at Bettar. Rebbi Joḥanan said, eighty [thousand] couples of horn-blowers were encircling Bettar, each of which was commanding several army units. There was Ben Koziba who had 200’000 with him missing a finger. The Sages sent, how long will you turn Israel into defective persons? He told them, how would it be possible to test them? They said to him, anyone who riding on his horse cannot uproot a cedar of Lebanon should not be enrolled in your army. He had 200’000 of either kind. When he went into battle he said, Master of the World: Do not support and do not hinder, did not you, God, neglect us, and do not go out with our armies. Three and a half years did Hadrian encircle Bettar. Rebbi Eleazar from Modiin was sitting in sackcloth and ashes, praying every day and saying, Master of the World, do not sit in judgment today, do not sit in judgment today. Hadrian wanted to go away. A Samaritan said to him, do not go away, for I am seeing what to do that the city will submit to you. He went to the city gate, entered, and found Rebbi Eleazar from Modiin standing in prayer. He showed himself as if he would whisper into his ear. The people of the city saw him and brought him to Ben Koziba. They said to him, we saw this old man turning to your uncle. He asked him, what did you say to him and what did he say to you? He answered, if I shall tell you, the king will kill me; but if I do not tell you, you will kill me. It is better that the king should kill me but not you. He told him, he said to me, I will make the town submit to the king. He came to Rebbi Eleazar from Modiin. He asked him, what did this Samaritan say to you. He answered, nothing. What did you say to him? He answered, nothing. He kicked him and killed him. Immediately there came an unembodied voice and said, woe, criminal shepherds, who abandon the flock, a sword on his arm and on his right eye. His arm shall dry up and his right eye darken. You killed Rebbi Eleazar from Modiin, the arm of Israel, and their right eye. Therefore this man’s arm shall dry up and his right eye darken. Immediately Bettar was taken and Ben Koziba killed. They came carrying his head to Hadrain. He asked them, who killed him? A Samaritan said to him, I killed him. He said to him, show me his body. He showed him his body; he found a poisonous snake wrapped around him. He said, if God had not killed him, who could kill him? He recited over him, if not that their Rock had sold them, and the Eternal handed them over. They killed them continuously until the horse was immersed in blood up to his nose. The blood was moving rocks of 40 seah loads, until the blood colored the sea for four mil. If you would say that it was close to the sea, in fact it is 40 mil distant from the sea. They said, 300 children’s brains were found on one stone, and they found three boxes of tefillin capsules of nine seah each, but some say nine of three each. It was stated, Rabban Simeon ben Gamliel says, 500 schools were in Bettar, the smallest one for not less than 500 children. They were saying, if the haters come against us we shall go out against them with these stylos and blind them. When the sins caused, they were binding each single one into his book and burning him; and of them only I remained. He recited referring to himself, my eye hurts my soul more than all daughters of my city. The evil Hadrian had a large vineyard, eighteen mil by eighteen mil, as from Tiberias to Sepphoris. He fenced it in with the slain of Bettar standing up with outstretched arms, and did not decide that they should be buried, until another king arose who decided that they should be buried.
HALAKHAH: “Who is injured in his lower parts,” etc. “Injured,” I would have said in his eye. The verse says “discharge pipe”, he is injured in the neighborhood of the discharge pipe. If he is injured in the neighborhood of the discharge pipe it might be his eye in the neighborhood of his nose! The verse says, “the lowly”. What comes between his heels. Rebbi Ḥaggai said before Rebbi Mana, a man’s lowest part when he sits down are his testicles. Rebbi Yose ben Rebbi Abun said, that is correct. You should know that this is so since in all other cases “generations” are written except in this case since he is infertile. And not only if [a testicle] is injured but also if it is gangrenous, or dried up, or missing. It was stated: Rebbi Ismael ben Rebbi Joḥanan ben Beroqa says: I heard in the vineyard at Jabne that nobody [born] with only one testicle can be fertile and he is a “sun eunuch”. Rebbi Yose said, I heard that practice follows Rebbi Joḥanan ben Beroqa but I do not remember from whom I heard it. Rebbi Immi said, certainly Rebbi Yose did not hear it from a minor personality. Samuel said, if a person with only one testicle will come before me, I shall declare him qualified. Rebbi Ḥuna said, because he thinks like Rebbi Ismael ben Rebbi Joḥanan. Rebbi Yudan ben Ḥanin said, but only the one of the right hand side. There came a case before Rebbi Immi. He said, yes, my daughter, you are permitted to him. But you should know that he is infertile. Rebbi Ze‘ira praised him for making the case clear.
MISHNAH: One testifies only on the appearance of the face with the nose, even though there may be marks on his body and his clothing. One testifies only up to three days. Even if one saw him cut up or crucified on the cross, or an animal eating of him, one testifies only after he has stopped breathing. Rebbi Judah ben Baba says, not all people nor all places nor all times are the same.
HALAKHAH: “One testifies only on the appearance of the face,” etc. Rav Jehudah said, the nose with the mandibles. This follows what Rebbi Jeremiah said in the name of Rav: “The recognition of their faces testified about them,” that is the nose. Rebbi Ḥiyya bar Abba said, if somebody does not want to be recognized, he should put a patch on his nostrils, then he will not be recognized. As in the following: In the times of king Ursicinus, some people from Sepphoris were under arrest warrants. They put patches on their nostrils and were not recognized. Finally they were denunciated and all caught because of lies.

It is written: “Abijah and his people inflicted a very great slaughter on them.” Rebbi Abba bar Cahana said, he destroyed the face recognition of the men of Israel. That is what is written, “the recognition of their faces testified about them,” etc. That refers to the nose. Rebbi Immi said, he put up guards for three days until appearance was disfigured. That is what is written: “Your widows are more for me than the sand of the oceans.” It was stated in this respect: One testifies only on the appearance of the face with the nose. It is written: “Jeroboam was powerless for the rest of Aijah’s days; the Eternal smote him and he died.” Rebbi Samuel said, you think that this refers to Jeroboam, but it is Abijah. Why was he smitten? Rebbi Joḥanan said, because he insulted Jeroboam in public. That is what is written: “You are a great multitude and with you are the golden calves that Jeroboam made for you as gods.” Rebbi Simeon ben Laqish said, because he denigrated his teacher Aḥijah from Shiloh. That is what is written: “And men, rascals, joined him,” that he called Aḥijah from Shiloh a rascal. But the rabbis say, because an idol fell into his hand and he did not destroy it, that is what is written: “Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took from him cities, Beth El and its dependencies …” and it is written: “He set up one in Beth El and one he dedicated in Dan.”

MISHNAH: If she was clothed in white, he covers her in black. If she wore gold jewelry, chains, nose rings and finger rings, he removes them from her in order to make her ugly. After that he brings an Egyption rope and binds it higher than her breasts. Anyone who wants to look may come and see, except for her male and female slaves because she feels superior to them. All women are permitted to see her, as it was said: “”all women should be taught and not do as your whoring.”
MISHNAH: From where did they measure? Rebbi Eliezer says, from his navel. Rebbi Aqiba says, from his nose. Rebbi Eliezer ben Jacob said, from the place which makes him slain, from his neck.
HALAKHAH: “From where did they measure? Rebbi Eliezer says, from his navel”, from the place the child is formed. “Rebbi Aqiba says, from his nose,” from the place from which one is identified. This follows what Rav Jehudah said in the name of Rav: “The recognition of their faces testified about them,” that is the nose. MISHNAH: The only difference between one who is under a vow [not to have] usufruct from another and one who is under a vow about use of food is passing through his real estate and vessels that cannot be used to prepare food. One who is under a vow about use of food should not borrow from him a fine or coarse sieve, a grindstone, or an oven. But he may borrow from him a robe or a stole, nose rings and finger rings, and anything that is not used to prepare food. At a place where one rents out any of these it is forbidden.
Rebbi Eleazar said, just as a nail cannot be taken out of a door without [loss of] wood, so it is impossible to get rid of Peˋor without [loss of] life. It happened that Sabbatai from Ulam leased his donkey to a Gentile woman to bow down before Peˋor. When they arrived at Peˋor’s temple, she told him, wait here for me while I am entering and bowing down before Peˋor. After she came out, he told her, wait here for me while I am entering and do what you did. What did he do? He entered, relieved himself, and cleansed himself on Peˋor’s nose. All were praising him and said, nobody yet had done what this man did. It happened that Menaḥem from Guvta-Ariaḥ was occupied with amphoras when the spirit of Peˋor came to him in the night. What did he do? He took a spit, stood up against him; he fled. He came to him in the second night and asked him, Menaḥem, why do you curse me? He was afraid of him and promised him, I shall not curse you in the future. It happened that a ruler came from overseas to bow down before Peˋor. He told them, bring one bull, one ram, and one sheep, to bow down before Peˋor. They told him, you have no need for all of these; you only have to strip yourself for him. What did he do? He provoked סניגורים against them; they were hitting them and smashing their brains with bats, saying to them: woe to you and your error.
MISHNAH: How does one annul it? If he cut off the top of its earlobe, the tip of its nose, the tip of its finger. If he disfigured it even though nothing is missing, he annulled it. If he spat in its face, urinated before it, dragged it, threw excrement on it, this is not annulled. If he sold or mortgaged it, Rebbi says it is annulled, but the Sages say it is not annulled.
And Rebbi Yasa said in the name of Rebbi Joḥanan: Not all the criteria together but only one criterion. The following are the criteria: The forehead, the eyebrows, the eye, the ear, the mandible, the nose, the beard, and the dimple. And Rebbi Yasa said in the name of Rebbi Joḥanan: Not all the criteria together but only one criterion. Rebbi Abba, Rav Jeremiah in the name of Rav: The words of Rebbi: Only if the entire face has human traits; but the words of the rabbis: Even one of the criteria; and the words of Rebbi Simeon ben Ioḥai: Even its fingernails. Rebbi Phineas asked: Are not the statements of Rebbi Simeon bar Ioḥai inverted? There, he says, “only if its head and most of its body are like its mother,” and here, he says so? Here about humans, there about animals. Rebbi Abba said, the Elder Rebbi Ḥiyya went South. Rebbi Ḥama the father of Rebbi Hoshaia and bar Qappara asked him: What is the rule if its entire body is human and only its face is animal? He returned and asked Rebbi, who told him, go and write to them, it is no birth. Rebbi Jeremiah said, Zeugos went out, Rebbi Ḥama the father of Rebbi Hoshaia and bar Qappara asked him: What is the rule if its eyes are shapeless? He returned and asked Rebbi, who told him, go and write to them, there is no child. Rebbi Yose ben Rebbi Abun said, Rebbi follows his own opinion since Rebbi says, only if the entire face has human traits. What if its face was crushed? Rebbi Yasa said, Rebbi Joḥanan and Rebbi Simeon ben Laqish differ. Rebbi Joḥanan says, it is no child; Rebbi Simeon ben Laqish says, it is a child. Rebbi Ze‘ira said, not that Rebbi Joḥanan said it is no child in every respect but it is no child to provide the mother with days of purity; it is a child to require the mother to observe the days of birth. Rebbi Joḥanan in the name of Rebbi Yannai: If its hip is unformed, it is not a child. Rebbi Joḥanan in the name of Rebbi Yose ben Rebbi Joshua: If the navel is unformed, it is no child. Rebbi Joḥanan in the name of Rebbi Zakkai: If its holes are unformed, it is no child. Rebbi Ze‘ira in the name of Gidul: If its skull is unformed there is no child.
It was stated: “Abba Shaul said, a human is created from his navel; from there is spreads its roots in all directions. It was stated: One sees his two eyes like two fly-blows, his two nose holes like two fly-blows, his mouth opened like a barley grain. One sees his two hands like two fly-blows, his navel like a fly-blow, his genital like a fly blow and if she is female, her genital spanned like a barley grain.” It was stated: Rebbi Jonathan says, one sees his two arms like two threads of crimson wool and his other limbs like compressed unformed material; he has not yet developed hands and feet. On that it is explained in the Bible: “My unformed body was seen by Your eyes, in Your ledger they are all written down, the days bundled before one of them was.”
The Babylonian Talmud
"Now Hannah she spake in her heart" (I Sam. i. 13) — Eleazar said in the name of R. Jose b. Zimra : [She spoke] about the concerns of her heart. She spake before Him, "Lord of the universe ! In all that Thou hast created in a woman Thou hast created nothing in vain — eyes to see, ears to hear, a nose to smell, a mouth to speak, hands wherewith to do work, feet to walk with, breasts to suckle with. But these breasts which Thou hast placed upon my heart, why have I not occasion to suckle with them? Give me a son, that I may suckle with them."
Bar Kappara said to Rabbi: I dreamt that my nose fell off. He replied : The divine wrath has departed from thee. He said to him : I dreamt that both my hands were cutoff. He replied : Thou wilt not be dependent upon the work of thy hands. He said to him : I dreamt that both my legs were amputated. He replied : Thou wilt ride upon a horse. He said to him : I dreamt that somebody told me, "Thou wilt die in Adar and not behold Nisan." He replied : Thou wilt die in honour [idruta] and not fall into the power of temptation [nissayon].
the lungs absorb all kinds of liquids, the liver arouses anger, the gall lets a drop fall upon it and stills it, the milt produces laughter, the large intestine grinds [food], the maw induces sleep and the nose awakens. Should the organ which induces sleep arouse from sleep, or should the organ which arouses from sleep induce sleep, the person pines away. It has been taught : Should both of them induce sleep or arouse from sleep simultaneously, one immediately dies.
The school of R. Jannai said : What means that which is written, "For the churning of milk bringeth forth curd, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood ; so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife" (Prov. xxx. 33)?
"And the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood" — a disciple with whom his master is the first time angry but he remains silent [under the rebuke] is worthy to distinguish between impure and pure blood.
Rather if the statement was at all made, it was made in connection with the latter part [of the mishnah]: if on its lesser part it is valid. R. Hisda said, The following was said by our great Master, may God be his help! This was taught only [if they were] in one place, but if in two or three places the etrog is as speckled and invalid. Rava said: And if it is on its nose, even the smallest rash, the etrog is invalid.
The City of Jerusalem was plowed over. This is a tradition. We read in a Baraita: When the wicked Tyrant (Titus Annius) Rufus plowed the site of the Temple Hall, Rabban Gamaliel was condemned to death. A certain general then appeared and, standing up in the school-house, said, "The man with the nose is wanted! the man with the nose is wanted!" When Rabban Gamaliel heard the call, he hid himself from the Romans, but the general called on him secretly and said to him: "If I save you will you bring me to the future world?" "Yes!" replied R. Gamaliel. "Swear it unto me!" and R. Gamaliel swore it unto him. The Roman thereupon went up to the roof, threw himself down and died. The decree against R. Gamaliel was then annulled, because there was a custom that if a decree was issued and one of those who signed it died, the decree was annulled. A heavenly voice then came forth declaring that the general was sure to have a share in the life of the world to come.
