Testament of Judah 3

1AND now I command you, my children, hearken to Judah your father, and keep my sayings to perform all the ordinances of the Lord, and to obey the commands of God.

Καὶ νῦν ἐντέλλομαι ὑμῖν, τέκνα μου, ἀκούσατε Ἰούδα τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν καὶ φυλάξασθε τοὺς λόγους μου τοῦ ποιεῖν πάντα τὰ δικαιώματα Κυρίου καὶ ὑπακούειν ἐντολὰς Θεοῦ. (16363)

2And walk not after your lusts, nor in the imaginations of your thoughts in haughtiness of heart; and glory not in the deeds and strength of your youth, for this also is evil in the eyes of the Lord.

Καὶ μὴ πονηρεύεσθε ὀπίσω τῶν ἐπιθυμιῶν ὑμῶν ἐν ὑπερηφανείᾳ καρδίας, καὶ μὴ καυχᾶσθε ἐν ἔργοις καὶ ἰσχύι τῆς νεότητος ὑμῶν ὅτι γε τοῦτο πονηρὸν ἐνώπιον Κυρίου ἐστί. (17912)

3Since I also gloried that in wars no comely woman's face ever enticed me, and reproved Reuben my brother concerning Bilhah, the wife of my father, the spirits of jealousy and of fornication arrayed themselves against me, until I lay with Bathshua the Canaanite, and Tamar, who was espoused to my sons.

Ἐπειδὴ κἀγὼ ἐγκαυχησάμενος ὅτι ἐν πολέμοις οὐκ ἠπάτησέ με πρόσωπον γυναικὸς εὐμόρφου, καὶ ὠνείδιζον Ῥουβίμ τὸν ἀδελφόν μου περὶ Βάλλας γυναικὸς τοῦ πατρός μου, καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ ζήλου καὶ τῆς πορνείας παρετάξαντο ἐπ' ἐμέ, ἕως συνετέλεσα εἰς Ἀνὰν τὴν Χαναναίτην καὶ εἰς Θαμὰρ τὴν νύμφην μου. (25578)

4For I said to my father-in-law: I will take counsel with my father, and so will I take thy daughter.

Ἔλεγον γὰρ τῷ πενθερῷ μου ὅτι συμβουλεύσομαι τῷ πατρί μου καὶ οὕτως λήψομαι τὴν θυγατέρα σου· (11782)

5And he was unwilling but he showed me a boundless store of gold in his daughter's behalf; for be was a king.

ὁ δὲ οὐκ ἤθελεν, ἀλλ' ἔδειξέ μοι εἰς ὄνομα τῆς θυγατρὸς αὐτοῦ χρυσοῦ πλῆθος ἄπειρον· βασιλεὺς γὰρ ἦν. (7647)

6And he adorned her with gold and pearls, and caused her to pour out wine for us at the feast with the beauty of women.

Καὶ ἐκόσμησεν αὐτὴν ἐν χρυσίῳ καὶ μαργαρίταις, καὶ ἐποίησεν αὐτὴν οἰνοχοεῖν ἡμῖν ἐν τῷ δείπνῳ. (8715)

7And the wine turned aside my eyes, and pleasure blinded my heart.

Καὶ ὁ οἶνος διέστρεψέ μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς, καὶ ἠμαύρωσέ μου τὴν καρδίαν ἡ ἡδονή. (7417)

8And I became enamoured of and I lay with her, and transgressed the commandment of the Lord and the commandment of my fathers, and I took her to wife.

Καὶ ἐρασθεὶς αὐτῆς συνέπεσα εἰς αὐτήν, καὶ παρέβην ἐντολὴν Κυρίου καὶ τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ πατρός μου, καὶ ἔλαβον αὐτὴν εἰς γυναῖκα. (9756)

9And the Lord rewarded me according to the imagination of my heart, inasmuch as I had no joy in her children.

Καὶ ὁ Κύριος ἀνταπέδωκέ μοι κατὰ τὸ διαβούλιον τῆς ψυχῆς μου ὅτι οὐκ ηὐφράνθην ἐν τοῖς τέκνοις αὐτῆς. (10747)

10And now, my children, I say unto you, be not drunk with wine; for wine turneth the mind away from, the truth, and inspires the passion of lust, and leadeth the eyes into error.

Καὶ νῦν λέγω, τέκνα μου, μὴ μεθύσκεσθε οἴνῳ, ὅτι ὁ οἶνος διαστρέφει τὸν νοῦν ἀπὸ τῆς ἀληθείας καὶ ἐμβάλλει ὀργὴν ἐπιθυμίας, καὶ ὁδηγεῖ εἰς πλάνην τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς. (12019)

11For the spirit of fornication hath wine as a minister to give pleasure to the mind; for these two also take away the mind of man.

Τὸ γὰρ πνεῦμα τῆς πορνείας τὸν οἶνον ὡς διάκονον ἔχει πρὸς τὴν ἡδονὴν τοῦ νοός. ὅτι καίγε τὰ δύο ταῦτα ἀφιστῶσι τὴν διάνοιαν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου. (13848)

12For if a man drink wine to drunkenness, it disturbeth the mind with filthy thoughts leading to fornication, and heateth the body to carnal union; and if the occasion of the lust be present, he worketh the sin, and is not ashamed.

Ἐὰν γὰρ πίῃς οἶνον εἰς μέθην, ἐν διαλογισμοῖς ῥυπαροῖς συνταράσσει τὸν νοῦν σου, καὶ εἰς πορνείαν ἐκθερμαίνει τὸ σῶμα πρὸς ἡδονήν, καὶ πράσσει τὴν ἁμαρτίαν καὶ οὐκ αἰσχύνεται. (12330)

13Such is the inebriated man, my children; for he who is drunken reverenceth no man.

Τοιοῦτός ἐστιν ὁ πάροινος, τέκνα μου, ὅτι ὁ μεθύων οὐκ αἰδεῖται οὐδένα. (6637)

14For, lo, it made me also to err, so that I was not ashamed of the multitude in the city, in that before the eyes of all I turned aside unto Tamar, and I wrought a great sin, and I uncovered the covering of my sons' shame.

Ἰδοὺ γὰρ κἀμὲ ἐπλάνησεν μὴ αἰσχυνθῆναι τὸ πλῆθος τῆς πόλεως· ὅτι ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς πάντων ἐξέκλινα πρὸς τὴν Θαμάρ, καὶ ἐποίησα ἁμαρτίαν μεγάλην, καὶ ἀνεκάλυψα κάλυμμα ἀκαθαρσίας υἱῶν μου. (13845)

15After I had drunk wine I reverenced not the commandment of God, and I took a woman of Canaan to wife.

Πιὼν τὸν οἶνον οὐκ αἰσχύνθην τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ ἔλαβον γυναῖκα Χαναναίαν. (6991)

16For much discretion needeth the man who drinketh wine, my children; and herein is discretion in drinking wine, a man may drink so long as he preserveth modesty.

Συνέσεως γὰρ πολλῆς χρήζει ὁ πίνων τὸν οἶνον, τέκνα μου, καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ σύνεσις τῆς οἰνοποσίας. ἕως ὅτε ἔχει αἰδῶ, πίνει. (12345)

17But if he go beyond this limit the spirit of deceit attacketh his mind, and it maketh the drunkard to talk filthily, and to transgress and not to be ashamed, but even to glory in his shame, and to account himself honourable.

Ἐὰν δὲ παρέλθῃ τὸν ὅρον, ἐμβάλλει εἰς τὸν νοῦν αὐτοῦ τὸ πνεῦμα τῆς πλάνης, καὶ ποιεῖ τὸν μέθυσον αἰσχρορημονεῖν καὶ παρανομεῖν καὶ μὴ αἰσχύνεσθαι ἀλλὰ καυχᾶσθαι τῇ ἀτιμίᾳ, καὶ νομίζειν εἶναι καλόν. (12541)

18He that committeth fornication is not aware when he suffers loss, and is not ashamed when put to dishonour.

Ὁ πορνεύων ζημιούμενος οὐκ αἰσθάνεται καὶ ἀδοξῶν οὐκ αἰσχύνεται. (6685)

19For even though a man be a king and commit fornication, he is stripped of his kingship by becoming the slave of fornication, as I myself also suffered.

Κἂν γάρ τις βασιλεύς ἐστι καὶ πορνεύει, γυμνοῦται τῆς βασιλείας, δουλωθεὶς τῇ πορνείᾳ ὡς κἀγὼ ἔπαθον. (9231)

20For I gave my staff, that is, the stay of my tribe; and my girdle, that is, my power; and my diadem, that is, the glory of my kingdom.

Δέδωκα τὴν ῥάβδον μου, τουτέστιν, τὸ στήριγμα τῆς ἐμῆς φυλῆς, καὶ τὴν ζώνην μου, τουτέστιν, τὴν δύναμιν, καὶ τὸ διάδημα, τουτέστιν, τὴν δόξαν τῆς βασιλείας μου. (14981)

21And indeed I repented of these things; wine and flesh I eat not until my old age, nor did I behold any joy.

Καίγε μετανοήσας ἐπὶ τούτοις, οἶνον καὶ κρέα οὐκ ἔφαγον ἕως γήρους μου, καὶ πᾶσαν εὐφροσύνην οὐκ εἶδον. (8956)

22And the angel of God showed me that for ever do women bear rule over king and beggar alike.

Καὶ ἔδειξέ μοι ὁ ἄγγελος τοῦ θεοῦ ὅτι κἂν βασιλέως κἂν πτωχοῦ κατακυριεύσωσιν αἱ γυναῖκες. οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν αὐτοῖς προκοπὴ ζωῆς. (12647)

23And from the king they take away his glory, and from the valiant man his might, and from the beggar even that little which is the stay of his poverty.

Τοῦ μὲν βασιλέως αἴρουσιν τὴν δόξαν· τοῦ ἀνδρείου τὴν δύναμιν, τοῦ δὲ πτωχοῦ τὸ τῆς πτωχείας ἐλάχιστον στήριγμα. (13651)

24Observe, therefore, my children, the right limit in wine; for there are in it four evil spirits--of lust, of hot desire, of profligacy, of filthy lucre.

Φυλάξασθε οὖν, τέκνα μου, τὸν ὅρον τοῦ οἴνου· ἔστιν γὰρ ἐν αὐτῷ τέσσαρα πνεύματα πονηρά· ἐπιθυμίας, πυρώσεως, ἀσωτίας καὶ αἰσχροκερδίας. (15114)

25If ye drink wine in gladness, be ye modest in the fear of God.

Ἐὰν πίνητε οἶνον ἐν εὐφροσύνῃ, ἐστὲ αἰδούμενοι μετὰ φόβου θεοῦ. (5589)

26For if in your gladness the fear of God departeth, then drunkenness ariseth and shamelessness stealeth in.

ἐὰν γὰρ ἐν εὐφροσύνῃ ἀποστῇ ὁ τοῦ Θεοῦ φόβος, λοιπὸν γίνεται μέθη, καὶ παρεισέρχεται ἡ ἀναισχυντία. (8603)

27But if ye would live soberly do not touch wine at all, lest ye sin in words of outrage, and in fightings and slanders, and transgressions of the commandments of God, and ye perish before your time.

Εἰ δὲ θέλετε σωφρόνως ζῆσαι, μηδ' ὅλως τοῦ οἴνου ἐφάπτεσθε ἵνα μὴ ἁμαρτάνητε ἐν λόγοις ὕβρεως καὶ μάχαις καὶ συκοφαντίαις καὶ παραβάσεσι ἐντολῶν Θεοῦ, καὶ ἀπολεῖσθε οὐκ ἐν καιρῷ ὑμῶν. (18114)

28Moreover, wine revealeth the mysteries of God and men, even as I also revealed the commandments of God and the mysteries of Jacob my father to the Canaanitish woman Bathshua, which God bade me not to reveal.

Καίγε μυστήρια Θεοῦ καὶ ἀνθρώπων ἀποκαλύπτει ὁ οἶνος, ὡς κἀγὼ τὰς ἐντολὰς τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ μυστήρια Ἰακὼβ τοῦ πατρός μου ἀπεκάλυψα τῇ Χανανίτιδι, ἅ μοι εἶπεν ὁ Θεὸς μὴ ἀποκαλύψαι. (17727)

29And wine is a cause both of war and confusion.

Καὶ πολέμου καὶ ταραχῆς αἴτιος γίνεται ὁ οἶνος. (3407)

30And now, I command you, my children, not to love money, nor to gaze upon the beauty of women; because for the sake of money and beauty I was led astray to Bathshua the Canaanite.

Καὶ νῦν ἐντέλλομαι ὑμῖν, τέκνα μου, μὴ ἀγαπᾶν ἀργύριον μηδὲ ἐπιβλέψαι εἰς κάλλος γυναικῶν· ὅτι κἀγὼ διὰ χρυσίον καὶ εὐμορφίαν ἐπλανήθην εἰς Βησουὲ τὴν Χαναναίαν. (12295)

31For I know that because of these two things shall my race fall into wickedness.

Καὶ οἶδα ὅτι διὰ τὰ δύο ταῦτα ἔσται τὸ γένος μου εἰς ἀπώλειαν πορνείας. (5720)

32For even wise men among my sons shall they mar, and shall cause the kingdom of Judah to be diminished, which the Lord gave me because of my obedience to my father.

ὅτι καὶ σοφοὺς ἄνδρας τῶν υἱῶν μου ἀλλοιώσουσιν καὶ βασιλείαν Ἰούδα σμικρυνθῆναι ποιήσουσιν, ἣν ἔδωκέ μοι Κύριος ἐν ὑπακοῇ πατρός μου. (13526)

33For I never caused grief to Jacob, my father; for all things whatsoever he commanded I did.

Ἐγὼ οὖν οὐδέποτε παρελύπησα Ἰακὼβ τὸν πατέρα μου, ὅτι πάντα ὅσα μοι ἔλεγεν ἐποίουν. (7403)

34And Isaac, the father of my father, blessed me to be king in Israel, and Jacob further blessed me in like manner.

Καὶ Ἀβραὰμ ὁ πρόπαππός μου εὐλόγησέ με βασιλεύειν ἐν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ Ἰακὼβ εὐλόγησέ με οὕτως. (6800)

35And I know that from me shall the kingdom be established.

Καὶ ἐγὼ οἶδα ὅτι ἐξ ἐμοῦ στήσεται τὸ βασίλειον. (3656)

36And I know what evils ye will do in the last days.

Καὶ ἔγνωκα ὅσα κακὰ ποιήσετε ἐν ταῖς ἐσχάταις ἡμέραις. (4148)

37Beware, therefore, my children, of fornication, and the love of money, and hearken to Judah your father.

Φυλάξασθε οὖν, τέκνα μου, ἀπὸ τῆς πορνείας καὶ τῆς φιλαργυρίας, καὶ ἀκούσατε Ἰούδα τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν. (10005)

38For these things withdraw au from the law of God, and blind the inclination of the soul, and teach arrogance, and suffer not a man to have compassion upon his neighbour.

Ὅτι ταῦτα ἀφιστᾷ τῷ νόμῳ τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ τυφλοῖ τὸ διαβούλιον τῆς ψυχῆς, καὶ ὑπερηφάνειαν ἐκδιδάσκει, καὶ οὐκ ἀφίει ἄνδρα ἐλεῆσαι τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ. (15503)

39They rob his soul of all goodness, and oppress him with toils and troubles, and drive away sleep from him, and devour his flesh.

Στερίσκει τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ πάσης ἀγαθότητος, καὶ συνέχει αὐτὸν ἐν πόνοις καὶ μόχθοις. Τὸν ὕπνον ἐκδιώκει ἀπ' αὐτοῦ, καὶ καταδαπανᾷ τὰς σάρκας αὐτοῦ. (15306)

40And he hindereth the sacrifices of God; and he remembereth not the blessing of God, he hearkeneth not to a prophet when he speaketh, and resenteth the words of godliness.

Θυσίας Θεοῦ ἐμποδίζει, καὶ εὐλογίαν Θεοῦ οὐ μνημονεύει. Προφήτου λαλοῦντος οὐκ ἀκούει, καὶ λόγους εὐσεβείας προσοχθίζει. (10235)

41For he is a slave to two contrary passions, and cannot obey God, because they have blinded his soul, and he walketh in the day as in the night.

Δυσὶ γὰρ πάθεσιν ἐναντίοις δουλεύει, καὶ Θεῷ ὑπακοῦσαι οὐ δύναται, ὅτι ἐτύφλωσεν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ὡς ἐν νυκτὶ πορεύεται. (14959)

42My children, the love of money leadeth to idolatry; because, when led astray through money, men name as gods those who are not gods, and it causeth him who hath it to fall into madness.

Τέκνα μου, ἡ φιλαργυρία πρὸς εἰδωλολατρείαν ὁδηγεῖ, ὅτι ἐν πλάνῃ ἀργυρίου τοὺς μὴ ὄντας θεοὺς ὀνομάζουσιν, καὶ ποιεῖ τὸν ἔχοντα αὐτὴν εἰς ἔκστασιν ἐμπεσεῖν. (12801)
