Testament of Reuben 2

1PAY no heed, therefore, my children, to the beauty of women, nor set your mind--on their affairs; but walk in singleness of heart in the fear of the Lord, and expend labour on good works, and on study and on your flocks, until the Lord give you a wife, whom He will, that ye suffer not as I did.

Μὴ οὖν προσέχετε, τέκνα μου, κάλλος γυναικῶν, μηδὲ ἐννοεῖσθε τὰς πράξεις αὐτῶν· ἀλλὰ πορεύεσθε ἐν ἁπλότητι καρδίας, ἐν φόβῳ κυρίου, καὶ μοχθοῦντες ἐν ἔργοις καλοῖς, καὶ ἐν γράμμασι, καὶ ἐν τοῖς ποιμνίοις ὑμῶν, ἕως οὗ ὁ κύριος δῴη ὑμῖν σύζυγον, ἣν αὐτὸς θέλει, ἵνα μὴ πάθητε, ὡς κἀγώ. (25763)

2For until my father's death I had not boldness to look in his face, or to speak to any of my brethren, because of the reproach.

Ὅτι ἄχρι τελευτῆς τοῦ πατρός μου οὐκ εἶχον παρρησίαν ἀτενίσαι εἰς τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ, ἢ λαλῆσαι τινι τῶν ἀδελφῶν μου, διὰ τοὺς ὀνειδισμούς. (15680)

3Even until now my conscience causeth me anguish on account of my impiety.

Καὶ ἕως νῦν ἡ συνείδησίς μου συνέχει με περὶ τῆς ἀσεβείας μου. (6093)

4And yet my father comforted me much, and prayed for me unto the Lord, that the anger of the Lord might pass from me, even as the Lord showed.

Καίγε πολλὰ παρεκάλεσέν με ὁ πατήρ μου, καὶ ηὔξατο περὶ ἐμοῦ πρὸς κύριον, ἵνα παρέλθῃ ἀπ' ἐμοῦ ἡ ὀργὴ κυρίου, καθὼς καὶ ἔδειξέ μοι κύριος. (8690)

5And thenceforth until now I have been on my guard and sinned not.

Ἀπὸ δὲ τότε ἕως νῦν παρεφυλαξάμην, καὶ οὐχ ἥμαρτον. (5286)

6Therefore, my children, I say unto you, observe all things whatsoever I command you, and ye shall not sin.

Διὰ τοῦτο τέκνα μου, λέγω ὑμῖν, φυλάξατε πάντα ὅσα ἐντέλλομαι ὑμῖν, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἁμάρτητε. (7724)

7For a pit unto the soul is the sin of fornication, separating it from God, and bringing it near to idols, because it deceiveth the mind and understanding, and leadeth down young men into Hades before their time.

Βόθρος γάρ ἐστι ψυχῆς ἡ ἁμαρτία τῆς πορνείας, χωρίζουσα ἀπὸ θεοῦ καὶ προσεγγίζουσα τοῖς εἰδώλοις, ὅτι αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ πλανῶσα τὸν νοῦν καὶ τὴν διάνοιαν, καὶ κατάγει νεανίσκους εἰς ᾅδην, οὐκ ἐν καιρῷ αὐτῶν. (19256)

8For many hath fornication destroyed; because, though a man be old or noble, or rich or poor, he bringeth reproach upon himself with the sons of men and derision with Beliar.

Καὶ γὰρ πολλοὺς ἀπώλεσεν ἡ πορνεία· ὅτι κἂν γέρων ἢ τις, κἂν εὐγενής, κἂν πλούσιος, κἂν πένης, ὀνειδισμὸν ἑαυτῷ φέρει παρὰ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ πρόσκομμα τῷ Βελίαρ. (16531)

9For ye heard regarding Joseph how he guarded himself from a woman, and purged his thoughts from all fornication, and found favour in the sight of God and men.

Ἠκούσατε γὰρ περὶ Ἰωσὴφ πῶς ἐφύλαξεν ἑαυτὸν ἀπὸ γυναικός, καὶ τὰς ἐννοίας ἐκαθάρισεν ἀπὸ πάσης πορνείας, καὶ εὗρεν χάριν ἐνώπιον θεοῦ καὶ ἀνθρώπων. (13980)

10For the Egyptian woman did many things unto him, and summoned magicians, and offered him love potions, but the purpose of his soul admitted no evil desire.

Καὶ γὰρ πολλὰ ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ ἡ Αἰγυπτία, καὶ μάγους προσεκάλεσεν καὶ φάρμακα αὐτῷ προσήνεγκε, καὶ οὐκ ἐδέξατο τὸ διαβούλιον τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ ἐπιθυμίαν πονηράν. (13869)

11Therefore the God of your fathers delivered him from every evil and hidden death.

Διὰ τοῦτο ὁ θεὸς τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν ἐρρύσατο αὐτὸν ἀπὸ παντὸς πονηροῦ κεκρυμμένου θανάτου. (10893)

12For if fornication overcomes not your mind, neither can Beliar overcome you.

Ἐὰν γὰρ μὴ κατισχύσει ἡ πορνεία τὴν ἔννοιαν ὑμῶν, οὐδὲ ὁ Βελίαρ δύναται κατισχῦσαι ὑμῶν. (8657)

13For evil are women, my children; and since they have no power or strength over man, they use wiles by outward attractions, that they may draw him to themselves.

Πονηραὶ γάρ εἰσιν αἱ γυναῖκες, τέκνα μου, καὶ ἐν τῷ μὴ ἔχειν αὐτὰς ἐξουσίαν ἢ δύναμιν ἐπὶ τὸν ἄνδρα, δολιεύονται ἐν σχήμασιν ὅπως αὐτὸν πρὸς ἑαυτὰς ἐπισπάσονται. (13569)

14And whom they cannot bewitch by outward attractions, him they overcome by craft.

Καὶ ὃν διὰ τοῦ σχήματος οὐκ ἰσχύουσιν καταγοητεύσασθαι, τοῦτον δι' ἀπάτης καταγωνίζονται. (9731)

15For moreover, concerning them, the angel of the Lord told me, and taught me, that women are overcome by the spirit of fornication more than men, and in their heart they plot against men; and by means of their adornment they deceive first their minds, and by the glance of the eye instil the poison, and then through the accomplished act they take them captive.

Ὅτι καίγε περὶ αὐτῶν εἶπέν μοι ὁ ἄγγελος τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ ἐδίδαξέ με, ὅτι αἱ γυναῖκες ἥττωνται τῷ πνεύματι τῆς πορνείας ὑπὲρ τὸν ἄνδρα, καὶ ἐν καρδίᾳ μηχανῶνται κατὰ τῶν ἀνθρώπων, καὶ διὰ τῆς κοσμήσεως πλανῶσιν αὐτῶν τὰς διανοίας, καὶ διὰ τοῦ βλέμματος τὸν ἰὸν ἐνσπείρουσιν, καὶ τότε τῷ ἔργῳ αἰχμαλωτίζουσιν. 16For a woman cannot force a man openly, but by a harlot's bearing she beguiles him.

Οὐ γὰρ δύναται γυνὴ ἄνδρα βιάσαι εἰς πρόσωπον ἀλλ' ἐν σχήμασι πορνικοῖς τοῦτον πανουργεύεται. (8246)

17Flee, therefore, fornication, my children, and command your wives and your daughters, that they adorn not their heads and faces to deceive the mind: because every woman who useth these wiles bath been reserved for eternal punishment.

Λοιπὸν φεύγετε τέκνα μου τὴν πορνείαν, καὶ προστάσσετε ταῖς γυναιξὶν ὑμῶν καὶ ταῖς θυγατράσιν ὑμῶν, ἵνα μὴ κοσμῶσι τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν καὶ τὰς ὄψεις πρὸς ἀπάτην διανοίας, ὅτι πᾶσα γυνὴ δολιευομένη ἐν τούτοις εἰς κόλασιν αἰώνιον τετήρηται. (22771)
