The Babylonian Talmud
The poor man and the priest have the same standard of time ! Against this I quote : From what time do we begin to read the Shema' in the evening ? From the time that the day becomes hallowed on the Sabbath-eve. These are the words of R. Eliezer. R. Joshua says : From the time the priests become ritually clean to partake of their Terumah. R. Meir says: From the time the priests bathe so as to be able to partake of their Terumah. (R. Judah asked him, "But do not the priests bathe while it is yet day ?") R. Hannina says : From the time the poor man goes home to eat his bread with salt. R. Ahai (another version : R. Aha) says : From the time when the majority of people go home to have their evening repast.
Shouldest thou maintain that the poor man and the priest have the same standard of time, then R. Hannina and R. Joshua hold the same opinion !
Which of the two is later? It is more probable that the poor man is later ; for shouldest thou maintain that he is earlier, then R. Hannina and R. Eliezer would hold the same opinion ! Must it not therefore be concluded that the poor man is later? Yes, draw that conclusion.
R. Zera (another version : R. Hannina b. Pappa) said : Come and see that the attribute of a human being differs from that of the Holy One, blessed be He. What is the attribute of a human being ? When a man sells a valued article to his fellow, the seller grieves and the purchaser rejoices. But with the Holy One, blessed be He, it is not so. He gave the Torah to Israel and rejoiced; as it is said, "For I give you good doctrine ; forsake ye not My teaching."
R. Jacob b. Iddi and Rab Aha b. Hannina [differ in opinion]. One of them says : Those are to be considered chastenings of love which do not involve neglect of Torah; as it is said, " Happy is the man whom Thou chastenest, O Lord, and teachest him out of Thy law " (Ps. xciv. 12).
R. Johanan was ill and R. Hannina went in to visit him. He said to him, "Are thy sufferings dear to thee?" "No," he replied, "neither they nor the reward they bring." R. Hannina said to him, "Give me thy hand." He gave him his hand and R. Hannina raised him.

R. Jose b. Hannina answered : He is worthy of the following blessings ; as it is said,] "Oh that thou wouldst hearken to My commandments! Then would thy peace be as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea ; thy seed also would be as the sand, and the offspring of thy body like the grains thereof ; his name would not be cut off nor destroyed from before Me" (Is. xlviii. 18 f.).
R. Jose b. R. Hannina derived it from the following : "Thus saith the Lord, In an acceptable time have I answered thee" (Is. xlix. 8).
R. Aha b. R. Hannina derived it from the following : "Behold, God despiseth not the mighty" (Job xxxvi. 5); and it is written, "He hath redeemed my soul in peace so that none came nigh me ; for they were many with me" (Ps. Iv. 19).
This is like what R. Joshua b. Levi said to his sons : Rise early and stay up late to enter the Synagogue, so that you may prolong your life. R. Aha b. R. Hannina asked, What is the Scriptural authority for this ? "Happy is the man that hearkeneth to Me, watching daily at My gates, waiting at the posts of My doors" (Prov. viii. 34), after which it is written, "For whoso findeth me findeth life" (ibid. v. 35).
"For this let every one that is godly pray unto Thee in the time of finding" (Ps. xxxii. 6). R. Hannina said: "In the time of finding" refers to [the choice of] a wife ; as it is said, "Whoso findeth a wife findeth a great good" (Prov. xviii. 22).
R. Johanan said : "In the time of finding" refers to burial. R. Hannina said: What is the Scriptural authority for this? Rab Shela said : Hence the popular saying : "Let a man pray for peace even to the last shovelful of earth."

There are some who apply the statement of Rab Aha b. Hannina to the following : There is a teaching : R. Simeon b. Johai said in the name of R. 'Akiba : There are times when a man reads the Shema' twice in a day, once before sunrise and once after sunrise, and thereby fulfils his obligation both for the day and night.
Rab Aha b. R. Hannina said in the name of R. Joshua b. Levi : The Halakah is in accord with R. Simeon who spoke in the name of R. 'Akiba. R. Zera said : This is so, only one does not say, "Cause us, O Lord our God, to lie down."

"A holy man." R. Jose b. R. Hannina said : He is holy, but not his servant : as it is said, "Gehazi came near to thrust her away" (ibid. v. 27). R. Simeon b. Lakish said: He seized her by the breast.
"That passeth by us continually" (ibid. v. 9). R. Jose b. R. Hannina said in the name of R. Eliezer b. Jacob : Whoever invites a disciple of the wise as a guest to his house and lets him enjoy his possessions, the Scriptures ascribe it to him as though he had brought continual offerings.
R. Jose b. R. Hannina also said in the name of R. Eliezer b. Jacob : Let not a man stand on an elevated place and pray, but let him pray in a lowly place; as it is said, "Out of the depths have I called Thee, O Lord" (Ps. cxxx. 1 ).

R. Hamma b. R. Hannina said : Whoever reads the Shema' with distinct pronunciation of its letters, Gehinnom is cooled for him ; as it is said, "When the Almighty scattereth kings therein, it snoweth in Zalmon" (Ps. Ixviii. 15). Read not bephares "[When the Almighty] scattereth," but read bepharesh "When one uttereth [the name of the Almighty] distinctly" ; and read not beZalmon "in Zalmon," but besalmawet "in the shadow of death."
R. Hamma b. R. Hannina also said : Why are there found associated
Every day a Bat Kol issues from Mount Horeb and proclaims : "All the world is nourished for the sake of My son, Hannina, but My son, Hannina, is satisfied with a Kab of locusts from the Sabbath-eve to the next Sabbath-eve."
Every day a Bat Kol issues from Mount Horeb and proclaims : "All the world is nourished for the sake of My son, Hannina, but My son, Hannina, is satisfied with a Kab of locusts from the Sabbath-eve to the next Sabbath-eve."
R. Jose b. Hannina said : From the following passage [did R. Johanan derive his reason] : "And let them grow [weyidgu] into a multitude in the midst of the earth" (ibid. xlviii. 16) ; i.e. as the fishes [dagim] in the sea are covered by the water and the Evil Eye has no power over them,
The teacher stated above : "He may expound the Mishnah but not the Talmud." This supports the statement of R. El'ai, for R. El'ai declared that Rab Aha b. Jacob said in the name of our master : The Halakah is that he may expound the Mishnah but not the Talmud. This is as the Tannaim [taught] : He may expound the Mishnah but not the Talmud ; these are the words of R. Meir. R. Judah b. Gamaliel says in the name of R. Hannina b. Gamaliel : Both of them are forbidden ; but [the Rabbis] said to him : Both of them are permitted.
R. Hannina replied : They have erected a great fence thereby; for there is a teaching : Once a man solicited a woman for an immoral purpose, and she said to him, "Thou good-for-nothing! Hast thou forty Saot of water in which to immerse?" He immediately left her.
R. Johanan and R. Joshua b. Levi, and R. Eleazar and R. Jose b. R. Hannina—one of the first pair is at variance with one of the second pair on the interpretation of the first part of this teaching. One says : The statement, "Of what does this speak? [If he wishes to study Torah] for himself; but [if he wishes to teach it] to others, forty Saot are necessary" is intended to apply only to a delicate person whose emission was voluntary, but nine Kabs suffice him when it was involuntary. The other says : Whoever [wishes to teach Torah] to others, even if he be a delicate person whose emission was involuntary, [cannot be regarded as clean] until there have been forty Saot.
Rab Assi (another version: Rab Hannina b. Pappa) said: Take heed to thy orifices at the time when thou standest in prayer before Me.
R. Hannina said : I have seen Rabbi hang up his Tefillin. Against this is quoted : He who hangs up his Tefillin will himself be hanged !
R. Hannina also said : I have seen Rabbi belch, yawn, sneeze, expectorate,
But that is not so ! For Rab Joseph b. Hannina said : When they speak of a "privy" they mean even one in which there is no excrement, and when they speak of a "bath-house" they mean even one in which there is no person. But with what are we here dealing? With a new one.
It has been reported : R. Jose b. R. Hannina said : The Patriarchs instituted the Tefillot. R. Joshua b. Levi said: The Tefillot were instituted to correspond with the continual sacrifices.
There is a teaching in agreement with both of them. There is a teaching in agreement with R. Jose b. R. Hannina: Abraham instituted the morning Tefillah; as it is said, "And Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he had stood" (Gen. xix. 27) — "standing" means prayer; as it is said, "Then stood up Phineas and prayed" (Ps. cvi. 30).
We might suppose that this is a refutation of R. Jose b. R. Hannina! But he could reply : I certainly maintain that the Patriarchs instituted the Tefillot, but the Rabbis subsequently found a basis for them in the sacrifices. For if thou sayest not so, who instituted the additional Tefillah, according to R. Jose b. R. Hannina? But the Patriarchs instituted the Tefillot, and the Rabbis subsequently found a basis for them in the sacrifices.

But he could reply : I certainly maintain that the Patriarchs instituted the Tefillot, but the Rabbis subsequently found a basis for them in the sacrifices. R. Zera said in the name of R. Assi, in the name of R. Eleazar, in the name of R. Hannina, in the name of Rab : At the side of this pillar, R. Ishmael b. R. Jose said the Sabbath-Tefillah on the Sabbath-eve.
'Ulla said : [He must bow] until he sees a ring [of flesh formed] opposite his heart. R. Hannina said : If he lowered his head, more than that is unnecessary. Raba said : That is so, if it gives him pain [to bow low] and he appears like one making obeisance.
Abbai b. Abin and R. Hannina b. Abin both said : [His prayer is keba'] who does not pray at dawn and sunset ; for R. Hiyya b. Abba said in the name of R. Johanan : It is a religious duty to pray at dawn and sunset. R. Zera said : What Scriptural authority is there for this? "They shall fear Thee with the sun and before the moon throughout all generations" (Ps. Ixxii. 5). In the West, they cursed anyone who prayed at those times. Why? Perhaps the time will be unsuitable for him.
R. Hannina the Bible-teacher sat before R. Jannai ; as he sat he said, "The Halakah is in agreement with R. Judah as stated in the name of R. Eleazar b. 'Azariah." He said to him, "Go out and read thy Bible verses in the street, for the Halakah is not in agreement with R. Judah as stated in the name of R. Eleazar b. 'Azariah."
But said R. Jose b. R. Hannina : [Derive it] from the following : "But as for me, in the abundance of Thy lovingkindness will I come into Thy house ; I will bow down toward Thy holy Temple in the fear of Thee" (Ps. v. 8).
He answered, "Thou hast reminded me of something which R. Jose b. R. Hannina said, viz. : What means that which is written, 'Through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt' (Jer. ii. 6) ? Since no man passed through it, how could anyone dwell there ! But it intends to tell us that every land concerning which Adam decreed that it should be inhabited has become inhabited, and every land concerning which Adam did not so decree has not been inhabited."
anything that is unseemly, he must rebuke him. "And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord" (ibid. v. 15) — 'Ulla (another version: R. Jose b. R. Hannina) declared : She said to Eli, "Thou art not 'a lord' in this affair, nor does the Holy Spirit rest upon thee, seeing thou hast suspected me of this thing."
R. Jose b. R. Hannina said : Why is "Thy handmaid" repeated thrice ? Hannah spake before the Holy One, blessed be He, "Lord of the universe ! Three breaches [bidke] through which death comes hast Thou created in a woman ; (another version : Three causes [dibke] of death), viz, : neglect of the laws concerning menstruation, Hallah and kindling the Sabbath-lights. Have I transgressed any of them?"
Rab Hamma b. R. Hannina said : Were it not for the following three verses, the feet of the enemies of Israel would give way under them;
R. Hannin said in the name of R. Hannina : Whoever prolongs his prayer, his prayer will not return empty. Whence have we this ? From Moses our teacher ; as it is said, "And I prayed unto the Lord" (Deut. ix. 26), and it is afterwards written, "[Now I stayed in the mount... forty days and forty nights ;] and the Lord hearkened unto me that time also" (ibid. x. 10).
R. Hamma b. Hannina said : If a man sees that he prays and is not answered he should repeat his prayer ; as it is said, "Wait for the Lord ; be strong and let thy heart take courage ; yea, wait thou for the Lord" (Ps. xxvii. 14).
Our Rabbis have taught : It happened in a certain place that there was a lizard which injured people. They came and informed R. Hannina b. Dosa. He said to them, "Show me its hole." They pointed it out to him, and he placed his heel over the mouth of the hole. The lizard came out and bit him, and it died.
At that time the saying originated : "Woe to the man who meets a lizard ; but woe to the lizard which R. Hannina b. Dosa meets."
A certain man went down [to the Ark] in the presence of R. Hannina. He said, "O God, the great, the mighty, the revered, the glorious, the powerful, the feared, the strong, the courageous, the certain, the honoured."
R. Hannina waited until he had finished. When he had finished, he said to him, "Hast thou exhausted all the praises of thy Lord? What is the use of all those [adjectives]? The three which we do say, if Moses our teacher had not used them in the Torah and the men of the Great Assembly come and instituted them in the Tefillah, we should not have been able to say ; and thou dost go on saying all those!" A parable : [It may be likened] to a human king who possessed a million golden denarii, and people kept praising him as the possessor of [a million denarii of] silver; is it not an insult to him ?
R. Hannina also said : Everything is in the hand of Heaven except the fear of Heaven; as it is said, "And now, O Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee but to fear" (Deut. x. 12).
Is, then, the fear of Heaven a small thing? Lo, R. Hannina has said in the name of R. Simeon b. Johai : The Holy One, blessed be He, has in His treasury nothing but the store of heavenly fear; as it is said, "And the fear of the Lord which is His treasure" (Is. xxxiii. 6) !
Yes, in the estimation of Moses it was a small thing ; for R. Hannina said : A parable : [It may be likened] to a man from whom a large vessel is required ; possessing it, it seems to him small ; but if he does not possess it, though it be small, it seems to him large.
Rab Judah said: A man should never pray for his personal needs in the first three or last three benedictions, but in the middle ones. For R. Hannina said : [When saying] the first three benedictions, he is like a slave recounting praise before his master ; [when saying] the middle benedictions, he is like a slave begging a reward from his master ; [when saying] the last three benedictions, he is like a slave who, receiving a reward from his master, takes his departure and goes away.
MISHNAH If one errs while saying the Tefillah, it is a bad omen for him; and should he be the messenger of the congregation, it is a bad omen for those who deputed him, since a man's deputy is similar to himself. They declared concerning R. Hannina b. Dosa that when praying on behalf of the sick, he would say, "This one will live, that one will die." They asked him, "How knowest thou?" He replied, "If my prayer is fluent in my mouth, I know that he is accepted; but if not, I know that he is rejected."
They declared concerning R. Hannina b. Dosa, etc. Whence is this? R. Joshua b. Levi said :For the Scriptures state, "Peace, peace to him that is far off and to him that is near, saith the Lord that createth the fruit of the lips; and I will heal him" (Is.lvii. 19).
Our Rabbis have taught : It once happened that the son of Rabban Gamaliel was ill. He sent two disciples of the wise to R. Hannina b. Dosa to pray on his behalf. When he saw them, he ascended to an upper chamber and prayed on his behalf. On descending he said to them, "Go, the fever has left him." They said to him, "Art thou a prophet?" He replied, "'I am no prophet nor a prophet's son' (Amos vii. 14) ; but so is my tradition : If my prayer is fluent in my mouth, I know that he is accepted ; but if not, I know that he is rejected." They sat down and wrote and noted the time. When they came to Rabban Gamaliel, he said to them, "By the Temple-service! You have neither understated nor overstated [the time]. But thus it happened ; at that very hour the fever left him, and he asked us for water to drink."
It also happened with R. Hannina b. Dosa that he went to Torah with Rabban Johanan b. Zakkai. The son of Rabban Johanan b. Zakkai fell ill, and he said to him, "Hannina, my son ! Pray on his behalf that he may live" R. Hannina laid his head between his knees, and prayed on his behalf, and he recovered. Rabban Johanan b. Zakkai said, "Were Ben Zakkai to press his head between his knees all the day long, no notice would be taken of him." His wife said to him, "Is, then, Hannina greater than thou?" He replied, "No; he is like a slave before the King, and I like a nobleman before the King."

Zakkai said, "Were Ben Zakkai to press his head between his knees all the day long, no notice would be taken of him." His wife said to him, "Is, then, Hannina greater than thou?" He replied, "No; he is like a slave before the King, and I like a nobleman before the King."

He replied, "No; he is like a slave before the King, and I like a nobleman before the King."
R. Hannina b. Pappa said : Whoever enjoys anything of this world without a benediction is as though he robbed the Holy One, blessed be He, and the Community of Israel ; as it is said, "Whoso robbeth his father or his mother and saith, It is no transgression, the same is the companion of a destroyer" (Prov. xxviii, 24) — "father" is none other than the Holy One, blessed be He ; as it is said, "Is not He thy father that hath gotten thee?" (Deut. xxxii. 6) ; and "mother" is none other than the Community of Israel ; as it is said, "Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother" (Prov. i. 8).
What means "the companion of a destroyer" ? R. Hannina b, Pappa said : He is the companion of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, who corrupted Israel against their Father in Heaven.
R. Hannina b. Pappa asked : It is written, "Therefore will I take back My corn in the time thereof" etc. (Hosea ii. 11), and it is written, "And thou shalt gather in thy corn" etc. (Deut. xi. 14) !
Rab Hamma b. R. Hannina said: He who makes it a habit to use black cumin will not suffer with pain of the heart. It is quoted in objection : Rabban Simeon b. Gamaliel says : Black cumin is one of the sixty deadly poisons, and he who sleeps to the east of his store [of cumin], his blood is on his own head ! There is no contradiction ; the latter referring to its odour, the other to its taste. The mother of R. Jeremiah used to bake bread for him and sprinkle [black cumin] upon it, and then scrape it off.
"A land of Olive-trees" — R. Jose b. R. Hannina said: [This means], a land where the standard for everything is the size of the olive. The standard for everything, dost imagine? Lo, there are the others just mentioned ! Nay, [the meaning is], a land where the standard for most things is the size of the olive.
R. Jacob b. Iddi said in the name of R. Hannina : Over any food which belongs to the five species, before partaking thereof one says the benediction "...Who createst various kinds of foods," and afterwards one benediction which is an abstract of three.
R. Jose b. R. Hannina said: The Sages agree with R. Eliezer that over a cup of wine intended for the Grace we do not say the benediction until water is added. What is the reason ? Rab Osha'ya answered : We require a commandment to be performed with the choicest.
R. Johanan said : Whoever says the benediction over a full cup will be granted a boundless inheritance; as it is said, "And full with the blessing of the Lord ; possess thou the sea and the south" (Deut. xxxiii. 23). R. Jose b. R. Hannina said: He will be worthy to inherit two worlds, this world and the world to come.
"He raises it a hand-breadth from the floor" — R. Aha b. R. Hannina said: What is the Scriptural authority ? "I will lift up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord" (Ps. cxvi. 13).
R. Isaac b. R. Hannina said in the name of Rab Huna: Throughout our Chapter, the Halakah is in agreement with Bet Hillel except in this point where it is in agreement with Bet Shammai. R. Osha'ya, however, teaches the reverse, that here also the Halakah is in agreement with Bet Hillel.
R. Hannina of Sura said : [In the sequel] he merely states the reason : What is the reason that we do not say a benediction over the light or spices of the gentiles ? Because the assumption is the banquet of gentiles is dedicated to idolatry.
"To be given a Scroll of the Torah from which to read and decline to read" — for it is written, "For that is thy life and the length of thy days" (Deut. 30:20). "To be handed the cup of benediction to say Grace and decline" — for it is written, "I will bless them that bless thee" (Gen. 12:3). "To give oneself an air of superiority" — for R. Hamma b. R. Hannina said : Why did Joseph die before his brothers? Because he gave himself superior airs.
The next commenced and said : He who enters a town and is afraid of the Evil Eye, let him take his right thumb in his left hand and his left thumb in his right hand and say the following: "I, A the son of B, come from the seed of Joseph against whom the Evil Eye had no power ; as it is said, 'Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine by a fountain' (Gen. xlix. 22). Read not 'ale 'ayin 'by a fountain' but 'ole 'ayin 'overcoming the [Evil] Eye'." R. Jose b. R. Hannina said : It may be derived from the verse : "And let them grow [weyidgu] into a multitude in the midst of the earth" (ibid, xlviii. 16) ; i.e. as the fishes [dagim] in the sea are covered by the water and the Evil Eye cannot have power over them, in similar manner the Evil Eye has no power over the seed of Joseph. Should he, however, be afraid of his own Evil Eye, let him gaze upon the wing of his left nostril.
The Roman Emperor said to R. Joshua b. R. Hannina, "You declare that you are wise. Tell me what I shall see in my dream." He replied, "Thou wilt see the Persians enslaving thee, despoiling thee, and making thee pasture unclean animals with a golden crook." The Emperor reflected upon it the whole day and in the night saw it [in a dream]. King Shapor said to Samuel, "You declare that you are very wise. Tell me what I shall see in my dream." He replied, "Thou wilt see the Romans come and take thee captive and make thee grind date-stones in a golden mill." The king reflected upon it the whole day and in the night saw it [in a dream].
R. Hannina said : Who dreams of a well will see peace ; as it is said, "And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of living water" (Gen. xxvi. 19). R. Nathan said : He will find Torah; as it is said, "Whoso findeth me findeth life" (Prov. viii. 35), and it is written here "a well of living water." Raba said : [It means] life literally.
R. Hanan said : There are three [types of dreams which indicate] peace — a river, bird and pot. "A river" — for it is written, "Behold I will extend peace to her like a river" (Is. Ixvi. 12). "A bird" — for it is written, "As birds hovering, so will the Lord of hosts protect Jerusalem" (ibid. xxxi. 5). "A pot" — for it is written, "Lord, Thou wilt establish peace for us" (ibid. xxvi. 12). R. Hannina said : But it must be a pot in which there is no meat; for it is said, "They chop them in pieces, as that which is in the pot, and as flesh within the caldron" (Micah iii. 3).
Who dreams of Ishmael, his prayer will be heard; but only of Ishmael the son of Abraham, and not of an ordinary Arab. Who dreams of a camel, death had been decreed upon him by Heaven, but he has been delivered therefrom. R. Hamma b. R. Hannina said : What is the Scriptural authority for this ? "I will go down with thee into Egypt ; and I will also surely bring thee up again" (Gen. xlvi. 4). Rab Nahman b. Isaac said : It may be derived from the following, "The Lord also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die" (II Sam. xii. 13).
the former referring to animals which are bridled, the latter to those which are not bridled. Who dreams of the name "Huna," a miracle will be wrought for him ; of "Hannina, Hananya, Johanan," miracles will be wrought for him. Who dreams of a Hasped, from Heaven will pity and redemption be vouchsafed him. This only applies [to him who sees in his dream the word Hesped] in writing.
Rab Pappa and Rab Huna b. Rab Joshua were journeying along the road and met Rab Hannina b. Rab Ika. They said to him, "Since we have seen thee, we will offer two benedictions on thine account : 'Blessed... Who impartest Thy wisdom to them that fear Thee' and 'Blessed... Who hast kept us in life' etc." He replied, "I also, since I have seen you, deem you to be in my eyes like the sixty myriads of the house of Israel and say three benedictions on your account : the two you have uttered and also 'Blessed... Who art wise in secrets'. " They said to him, "Art thou as wise as all that?" They set their eyes on him and he died.
Raba also said : The universe was only created for the completely wicked or the completely righteous. Raba said : Let a man know himself whether he is completely righteous or not. Rab said : The universe was only created for Ahab the son of Omri and for R. Hannina b. Dosa — for Ahab the son of Omri, this world; and for R. Hannina b. Dosa, the world to come.
Raba also said : The universe was only created for the completely wicked or the completely righteous. Raba said : Let a man know himself whether he is completely righteous or not. "Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily" (ibid. 5:5). R. Jose b. R. Hannina said : Whoever deals contemptuously with garments will in the end derive no benefit from them ; as it is said, "Now King David was old and stricken in years ; and they covered him with clothes but he could get no heat" (I Kings i. 1).
What means "the time appointed" ? Samuel the Elder, the son-in-law of R. Hannina, said in the name of R. Hannina : From the time of slaying the continual offering until the time of the sprinkling of the blood. R. Johanan said : [It means] precisely until noon.

"Attend [hasket]" — i.e. "form classes" and occupy yourselves with Torah, because Torah is only acquired in a class. This is in accord with the statement of R. Jose b. R. Hannina who said : What means that which is written, "A sword is upon the boasters [baddim] and they shall become fools" (Jer. 1. 36)? A sword is upon the enemies of the disciples of the wise who sit separately [bad wa-bad] and study Torah. Not only so, but they become foolish ; for it is written here "And they shall become fools" and in another passage it is written, "For that we have done foolishly" (Num. xii. 11). [not translated]
R. Eleazar said in the name of R. Hannina: The disciples of the wise increase peace in the world; as it is said, "And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord ; and great shall be the peace of thy children" (Is. liv. 13). Read not banayik "thy children" but bonayik "thy builders[1]"
