Jerusalem Talmud Sheviit 4:19

Explanation: Rebbi Ḥinena bar Pappa and Rebbi Samuel bar Naḥman passed by one of the ploughmen in the Sabbatical. Rebbi Samuel bar Naḥman said to him, may you succed. Rebbi Ḥinena bar Pappa said to him, did not Rebbi teach us (Ps. 129:8): “The passers-by did not say,” this implies that it is forbidden to say “may you succeed” to one who ploughs in the Sabbatical. He told him, you know how to read but you do not know how to make a homily. “The passers-by did not say,” refers to the nations of the world who pass out of the world, they did not say to Israel “the blessing of the Eternal is on you.” What does Israel say to them, “we bless you in the Name of the Eternal.” All blessings that come into the world because of us are not enough for you, you do not say, come and take from these blessing for yourselves, but you roll over us pro-rated contributions and fines, head taxes and annonae.

Rebbi Jacob bar Aḥa in the name of Rebbi Yasa: The world only continues to exist by the sacrifices. There, we stated: “Simeon the Just was of the remainders of the Great Assembly. He used to say, the world continues to exist by three things, by the Torah, by worship, and by labors of love” All three are in one verse: I shall put My word in your mouth, that is Torah. By the shadow of My hands I shall cover you, these are labors of love; to teach you that he who is occupied with Torah and labors of love merits to dwell in the shadow of the Holy One, praise to Him. That is what is written, how precious is Your grace, o God, and humans take shelter in Your wings’ shadow. To plant the Heavens and give foundation to the earth, these are the sacrifices, and to say to Zion, you are My people, these are Israel. Rebbi Ḥinena bar Pappa said, we went over all of Scripture and only found this one that Israel was called Zion, and to say to Zion, you are My people. There, we stated: “Rabban Simeon ben Gamliel says, the world is existing on three things, on justice, on truth, and on peace. All three are one: If justice is done, truth is accomplished. If truth is accomplished, peace is established. Rebbi Mana said, and all are in one verse, judge truth and law of peace in your gates.

The Babylonian Talmud

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 1:135

R. Zera (another version : R. Hannina b. Pappa) said : Come and see that the attribute of a human being differs from that of the Holy One, blessed be He. What is the attribute of a human being ? When a man sells a valued article to his fellow, the seller grieves and the purchaser rejoices. But with the Holy One, blessed be He, it is not so. He gave the Torah to Israel and rejoiced; as it is said, "For I give you good doctrine ; forsake ye not My teaching."

Some say he meant, Do not lie down to sleep without first reading the Shema'; others explain he meant, Do not marry a proselyte; but others declare that he really meant an Aramaean woman, because of what happened to Rab Pappa.

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 1:344

For Rab Pappa went to the house of an Aramaean woman, who brought out a couch for him and told him to be seated. He said to her, "I will not sit down until thou raisest up the couch." Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 2:78

Rab Pappa replied : In the West they hold that "And thou shalt say unto them" is likewise not considered a commencement, until one adds "And they shall make for themselves fringes."

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 2:174

How is that demonstrated ? Rab Pappa said : Because [the text uses the word] "way" [we argue]: Just as the way is voluntary, so all is voluntary.

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 3:9

It is here at any rate taught that [the mourner, although he is not in the same room as the body,] is exempt from reading the Shema', from Tefillah, Tefillin, and all the commandments mentioned in the Torah ! Rab Pappa replied : [The Baraita] is to be interpreted as referring to one who turns his face from the body and eats. Rab Ashe said : Since the duty of burying rests upon him, it is to be regarded as though the body was lying before him; as it is said, "And Abraham rose up from before his dead" (Gen. xxiii. 3) and it is said "That I may bury my dead from before me" (ibid. v. 4), i.e. so long as the duty of burial rested upon him, it was as though the body was actually before him.

[If he wishes to study Torah] for himself [nine Kabs are sufficient] ; but [if he wishes to teach it] to others, forty Saot are necessary.' So permit me to say Grace, because forty Saot have been poured over me" [by means of immersion]. Rab Huna said to them, "Permit me to say Grace, since I have had need neither of the one nor the other."

(Deut. xxxii. 6) ; and "mother" is none other than the Community of Israel ; as it is said, "Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother" (Prov. i. 8).

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 6:158

Rab Pappa said : It is evident to me that the water of the beet is like the beet, the water of the turnip like the turnip, and the water of all vegetables like the vegetables themselves. Rab Pappa asked : How is it with dill-water ? Is it used to sweeten the taste or to remove the bad smell?

But R. Judah declares : "...Who createst divers kinds of herbs." R. Zera (another version : R. Hinnana b. Pappa) said : The Halakah is not in accord with R. Judah. R. Zera (another version: R. Hinnana b. Pappa) also said: What is R. Judah's reason? The Scriptures state, "Blessed be the Lord day by day" (Ps. Ixviii. 20) — are we to bless Him by day and not by night ! Nay, it means to tell thee : Day by day give Him the appropriate blessing ; so here also, for every species of food give Him an appropriate benediction.

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 6:182

But R. Judah declares : "...Who createst divers kinds of herbs." R. Zera (another version : R. Hinnana b. Pappa) said : The Halakah is not in accord with R. Judah. R. Zera (another version: R. Nay, it means to tell thee : Day by day give Him the appropriate blessing ; so here also, for every species of food give Him an appropriate benediction.

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 6:183

R. Zera (another version : R. Hinnana b. Pappa) also said : Come and see that the attribute of the Holy One, blessed be He, is not like that of the human being. The attribute of the human being is to support the empty vessel but not the full ; but the Holy One, blessed be He, is not so — He supports the full vessel, not the empty. As it is said, "And He said. If hearing, thou wilt hear" (sic ! Exod. xv. 26) — i.e. if thou wilt hear [once], thou wilt hear again; but if not, thou wilt not hear. Another explanation is : If thou wilt hear the old, thou wilt also hear the new; but should thine heart turn aside [from the Torah], thou wilt never again hear.

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 6:231

Rab Pappa said : The Halakah is — Articles of food which are brought in connection with the meal, in the course of the meal, require a benediction neither before nor after; if they are not brought in connection with the meal, in the course of the meal, they require a benediction before but not after ; if brought after the meal, they require a benediction before and after.

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 6:237

Rab Pappa went on a visit to the house of Rab Huna b. Rab Nathan. After they had finished their meal, they set before them several things to eat. Rab Pappa took of them and ate. He should not go out into the street perfumed. R. Abha b. R. Hiyya b. Abba said in the name of R. Johanan : This refers to a place where people are suspected of pederasty. R. Isaac declared : Even over vegetables, but not over water. Rab Pappa said : Even over water.

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 6:316

We have a Mishnaic teaching : Everything that requires a benediction after it requires one before it ; but there are things which require a benediction before but not after. Rab Pappa said to Abbai : In that case, even if [the Levite] anticipated [and separated his tithe] from the corn-heap, it would likewise [be exempt from the great Terumah] ! He replied : To meet thy objection the Scriptures state,

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 7:91

The first tithe from which Terumah has not been taken. That is evident ! No ; it is necessary [to mention it] for the case where [the Levite] anticipated [the priest by taking the tithe] from the corn-heap. Thou mayest argue that it is as Rab Pappa said to Abbai. Therefore we are informed that it is as Abbai answered him.

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 7:144

Strictly speaking, even "Who...rebuildest Jerusalem" does not require one ; but since it mentions the kingdom of the house of David, it is not proper to omit a reference to the [Divine] Kingship. Rab Pappa said : This is what R. Zera meant to say: It requires two references to Kingship besides the one for its own sake.

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 7:182

R. Ishmael says: Rafram b. Pappa visited the Synagogue of Abi Gibar. He stood up, read in the Scroll and exclaimed, "Bless ye the Lord"; he then stopped and did not say "Who is to be blessed." They all shouted "Bless ye the Lord Who is to be blessed," Raba said: Thou black pot! What hast thou to do with this controversy? Moreover, everybody acts in accord with the opinion of R. Ishmael.

Another version is : They both [dreamt that they] walked into a pool; but Rab Pappa, who was wearing a drum around his neck, was made Principal of the Seminary, whereas Rab Huna b. Rab Joshua, who had no drum around his neck, was made the head of the Collegiates. Rab Ashe said : I [once dreamt that I] walked into a pool, with a drum around my neck, and I made a noise therewith.

Rab Joshua that he walked into a forest and was made the head of the Collegiates.

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 9:158

Our Rabbis have taught : [If one dreams] there is a corpse in the house, there will be peace in the house ; that he was eating and drinking in the house, it is an auspicious omen for the house ; that he took a vessel from the house, it is an inauspicious omen for the house. Rab Pappa explained [the "vessel" to refer to] a shoe or sandal. Everything that the corpse takes away [if seen in a dream] is auspicious with the exception of a shoe or sandal; and everything that the corpse gives is auspicious with the exception of dust and mustard.

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 9:185

Rab Pappa and Rab Huna b. Rab Joshua were journeying along the road and met Rab Hannina b. Rab Ika. They said to him, "Since we have seen thee, we will offer two benedictions on thine account : 'Blessed... Who impartest Thy wisdom to them that fear Thee' and 'Blessed... Who hast kept us in life' etc." He replied, "I also, since I have seen you, deem you to be in my eyes like the sixty myriads of the house of Israel and say three benedictions on your account : the two you have uttered and also 'Blessed... Who art wise in secrets'. " They said to him, "Art thou as wise as all that?" They set their eyes on him and he died.

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 9:204

Rab Samuel b. Isaac said : There is no significance in morning-clouds ; for it is written, "Your goodness is as a morning cloud" (Hosea vi. 4). Rab Pappa said to Abbai : But there is a proverbial expression, "If on opening the door [in the morning] there is rain, set down thy sack, O ass-driver, and lie on it"! There is no contradiction ; for this refers to [a sky] covered with heavy clouds, whereas the former refers to [a sky] covered with light clouds.

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 9:205

R. Alexander said in the name of R. Joshua b. Levi : Thunder was only created to break the pride of the heart ; as it is said, "God hath so made it that men should fear before Him" (Eccles. iii. 14). Also said R. Alexander in the nanie of R.Joshua b. Levi : Who sees the rainbow should prostrate himself upon his face; as it is said, "As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud...and when I saw it, I fell upon my face" (Ezek. i. 28). In the West they curse one who acts thus, because it has the appearance as though he worships the rainbow ; but he should certainly pronounce a benediction. What is the benediction ? "Blessed. ..Who remembrest the Covenant." It has been taught in a Baraita : R. Ishmael, the son of R. Johanan b. Baroka says: [The benediction is, "Blessed...] Who art faithful with Thy Covenant and fulfillest Thy word." Rab Pappa said: Let us therefore say both : "Blessed ... Who remembrest the Covenant, art faithful with Thy Covenant and fulfillest Thy word."

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 9:208

This is at variance with the statement of Rafram b. Pappa who said in the name of Rab Hisda : Since the Temple was destroyed, the firmament has never been seen in its purity ; as it is said, "I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering" (Is. 1. 3).

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 9:216

" Is it "abundant thanksgivings" and not "all thanksgivings"? Raba declared: I say "God of thanks-givings." Rab Pappa said : Let us therefore say both : "Abundant thanksgivings and God of thanksgivings."

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 9:257

How is it to be concluded? Rab said, "[Blessed art Thou, O Lord,] Who healest the sick." Samuel said: Does Abba regard the whole world as sick? Nay, [the conclusion of the benediction should be : "Blessed...] Who healest all flesh." Rab Sheshet said : [It should conclude : "Blessed...] Who doest wondrously." Rab Pappa said : Let us therefore say both : "Who healest all flesh and doest wondrously."

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 9:357

Rab Pappa said to Raba (other versions : Rabina to Raba ; Rab Adda b. Mattena to Raba) : Why should one derive it [by analogy] from a shoe ; let him derive it from the short cut !

Babylonian Talmud Berakhot 9:360

[Rab Pappa] answered : This is the position I take up : Let us derive a strict conclusion from the instance, [of the shoe] and also from the instance [of the short cut]

Babylonian Talmud Makkot 1:139

Rav Pappa asked Abayi, Now that we've established that they [the witnesses] do not combine [in the case of] one [witness] from this window and one [witness] from this window where this [witness] observed the entire action and this [witness] observed the entire action, Do we need to say [the case of] one [witness] after the other [from the same window] where they each only observed half of the action? He answered him, We only need it for [the case of witnesses to] a cohabitation.

Babylonian Talmud Makkot 2:23

Rav Pappa said: One who threw a clod of dirt at a palm tree, and [the clod of dirt] knocked dates, and the dates fell and killed someone—[in this case] we have arrived at the disagreement between Rebi and the Sages! But this is obvious! Since you might have said that [the death in this instance is] like a case of secondary force, therefore this teaches you that this is not the case [and that this is a case where the death is a result of primary force, and therefore this case is parallel to the Mishnah].

Babylonian Talmud Makkot 3:69

Rav Pappa said to Rava But [a lo saseh sh'kedmu asseh] is not similar to the prohibition of muzzling, [so how can Rebbi Yochanon rule that one receives malkus]? Rava answered him, Just because the Torah writes by it an additional commandment, does that make it any less stringent?!

Babylonian Talmud Makkot 3:186

Rav Pappa inquired, If he had [the maaser sheni] on a stick, what would be the law? Let [the question] stand.

Babylonian Talmud Makkot 3:196

Ravina said, The Barasia is referring to where he carried the Maaser Sheni on a stick, and thus we can answer the question of Rav Pappa.

Babylonian Talmud Makkot 3:228

Rav Pappa said, The [rulings that concern] mishnas and baraisas [are attributed to] Rav Malkio. The [rulings that concern] amorahic teachings [are attributed to] Rav Malkio. And your mnemonic would be, A mishna is a queen. What is the difference between [Rav Nachman's opinion and Rav Pappa's opinion]? The difference between them is [the ruling concerning] maidservants.

Babylonian Talmud Makkot 3:340

Rav said, I am worried from that verse, "and you will become lost among the nations". Rav Pappa challenged him, Perhaps, it refers to a lost article that one searches for, as it is written, (Psalms 119, 176) "I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant". Rather, [Rav was worried] from the later part of the verse. (Leviticus 26,38) "And you will be consumed in the land of your enemies". Mar Zutra challenged him, Perhaps it refers to the eating of cucumbers and gourds [which still survive after some of them are consumed].
